Women’s soccer drops NESCAC match at Middlebury, 1-0

Continentals look to bounce back in their home opener on Tuesday, Sept. 10

Middlebury, Vt. – Middlebury College's Sophia Cole scored the lone goal and the Panthers posted a 1-0 NESCAC win over the Hamilton College Continentals at Middlebury's Dragone Field on Saturday, Sept. 7. 
 

Season Update

  • Hamilton (0-1-1, 0-1-1 NESCAC) dropped its first contest of the season.
  • Middlebury (2-0-0, 1-0-0) was playing its home and conference opener. 

How It Happened

  • Sophia Cole scored Middlebury's only goal of the match with a little over seven minutes left in the first half off a corner kick taken by Stella Espinasse. 
  • Erin Rayhill '25 nearly knotted the score in the 58th minute with a shot from the top-left corner of the 18-yard box but Middlebury's Carolyn Kelley made the one-arm jumping save to deny the equalizer. 
  • The Panthers outshot the Continentals 17-5 with 10 shots on target. Hamilton produced all five of its shots in the second half.  
  • Middlebury held a 7-4 edge in corner kicks. 

Notes

  • Nieve Tonna '26 made eight stops in goal for the Continentals. 
  • Cole scored her first goal of the season for the Panthers. 
  • Middlebury's Sydney Poppinga tallied one save in the first 52 minutes of action.
  • Kelley replaced Poppinga and stopped one shot.

Next Match

  • The Continentals play their first home match of the 2024 season on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 4:30 p.m. against Oswego State on Love Field.
