No. 24 field hockey lifted by Kelley '25 goal in fourth quarter

Continentals edged Union 2-1 in non-conference action

CLINTON, N.Y. – Hamilton College's Lydon Kelley '25 scored midway through the fourth quarter and lifted the Continentals to a 2-1 non-conference win against the Union College Garnet Chargers at Hamilton's Goodfriend Field on Wednesday evening, Sept. 18.

Season Update

  • The 24th-ranked Continentals (3-2 overall) have already played four one-goal games.
  • Union (4-2) had won its previous three contests by a combined score of 16-0.

How It Happened

  • Delaney Grace '25 inserted the ball to Claire Tratnyek '26 on the only penalty corner of the fourth quarter. Tratnyek passed it over to Kelley near the edge of the arc on the right side. Kelley dribbled into the middle of the arc and bounced a backhand shot into the back of the cage with 8:48 left.
  • The Garnet Chargers didn't take another shot after that, even when they took out their goalkeeper for another field player with about two minutes remaining.
  • After a scoreless first quarter, Hamilton took a 1-0 lead with 2:50 to go in the second. Kelley took a shot that was blocked and Evelyn Butorac '27 pounded the rebound right at the goalkeeper. Grace pounced on the loose ball and knocked it into the cage from close range.
  • Union erased its one-goal deficit just 1:37 into the third quarter. Maddie Greco gained control of possession near midfield and took off towards the Continentals' cage. Greco passed off to Shaelyn Kelley near the edge of the arc and got it right back. She made a move to avoid the goalkeeper and deposited the ball into the empty cage.
  • Greco tried to give the Garnet Chargers the lead in the final minute of the third but Kelly Janssen '28 came off her line to meet the shot and kicked it away.

Notes

  • Kelley leads Hamilton with three goals and six points this season.
  • Grace tallied her first goal this season and the 13th of her career with the Continentals.
  • Abby Griffin '26 started in the cage for Hamilton and made four saves.
  • Janssen relieved Griffin at the start of the third quarter and stopped one shot as the Continentals surrendered three shot attempts in the second half.
  • Sophie Brady turned away six shots for Union. Greco leads the team with seven goals.
  • Hamilton held a 16-10 shot advantage.
  • The Garnet Chargers had five of their eight penalty corners in the second quarter. The Continentals finished the game with four.
  • Hamilton has won each of the last two games with a goal midway through the fourth quarter.
  • The Continentals have won the last five meetings with Union.
