CLINTON, N.Y. – Hamilton College's
Evelyn Butorac '27 scored midway through the fourth quarter and lifted the Continentals to a big 2-1 NESCAC win against the Wesleyan University Cardinals at Hamilton's Goodfriend Field on Saturday, Sept. 14.
Season Update
- The nationally ranked No. 24 Continentals (2-2, 1-1 NESCAC) posted their first win in three attempts against a ranked opponent.
- No. 15 Wesleyan (3-1, 0-1) suffered its first loss of 2024 in its conference opener.
How It Happened
- The play that led to the game-winning goal didn't look like much as a foul by the Cardinals gave Hamilton a restart near midfield. Sydney Familo '25 whacked the ball across the 23-meter line and it was tipped by a Wesleyan player. The momentum of Familo's hard pass carried the ball into the arc where Butorac ran onto it. She smashed a bouncing shot between the goalkeeper and the near post from the right wing with 7:54 left.
- Claire Tratnyek '26 gave Hamilton a 1-0 advantage just 1:52 into the first quarter. Delaney Grace '25 inserted the ball to Tratnyek at the top-right portion of the arc on a penalty corner. A centering pass by a teammate was deflected by a defender and Tratnyek stole the ball from a Cardinals player. She swept a low shot into the back of the cage through the traffic in front.
- Wesleyan had five of its 10 shots in the second quarter and the Cardinals were rewarded for their solid play with 18 seconds remaining. Helen Deretchin scored on a backhand shot into the right side of the cage from near the top of the arc after a turnover by the Continentals inside the arc.

- Kelly Janssen '28 relieved Griffin at the start of the third quarter and stopped one shot.
