Volleyball sweeps St. Lawrence in home opener

McGeiver ’27 tallied 19 kills in three-set victory for the Continentals

CLINTON, N.Y.  Hamilton College's Elodie McGeiver '27 recorded 19 kills as the Continentals defeated the St. Lawrence University Saints in three sets (25-19, 25-22, 25-16) on Friday evening, Sept. 13 inside Hamilton's Margaret Bundy Scott Field House. 

Season Update
  • Hamilton (1-4 overall) picked up its first win of the 2024 season. The Continentals were playing their home opener. 
  • St. Lawrence (1-5), which is a member of the Liberty League, dropped its fifth consecutive contest. 
How It Happened
  • Leading 9-7 in the opening set, the Continentals claimed the next four points for a 13-7 advantage. 
  • Hamilton held a 16-10 lead after back-to-back kills from McGeiver and Allie Steel '28. McGeiver gave the Continentals a 19-11 cushion with a service ace. 
  • The Continentals were two points away from clinching the set, but the Saints threatened with four straight points to trail 23-18. Another kill by McGeiver and a St. Lawrence attacking error gave Hamilton the set win. 
  • Tied 11-11 in the second frame, McGeiver pounded three consecutive kills for a 14-11 advantage. St. Lawrence countered with the next six points for a 17-14 lead. 
  • Trailing 19-16, Hamilton got hot at the net and produced five kills from four different players to reclaim the lead at 22-19. The Saints attempted to fight back but the Continentals claimed set two on another kill by McGeiver. 
  • St. Lawrence scored the first five points of the third set. Hamilton responded and ran off six straight points for its first lead of the set at 6-5. 
  • The Continentals found themselves down by a pair at 16-14, but kills from Drew Stimson '25 and Ayzlinn Trefren '28 along with two Saints attacking errors put them up 16-14. 
  • The Continentals put the crowd on its feet, scoring nine of the last 11 points to secure the sweep. Hamilton tallied six kills in its final nine points, led by Stimson with three. 
Notes
  • McGeiver led Hamilton with 19 kills and is third in the NESCAC with 3.40 per set. She added 11 digs, two service aces and a solo block. 
  • Stimson boasted a .400 hitting percentage in 15 attack attempts. 
  • Trefren contributed eight kills, 12 digs, one service ace and one block. 
  • Pati Cerda '26 collected a team-best 33 assists and chipped in 10 digs.
  • Mia Jessen '28 contributed a team-high 13 digs. 
  • Araiza Acum-Santos paced St. Lawrence with eight kills. 
  • Vanessa Latam finished with 12 digs, a team-best 11 assists and four service aces.
  • Rose Meihaus recorded four blocks for the Saints. 
Next Match
  • Hamilton hosts Keuka College along with SUNY Morrisville on Saturday, Sept. 14. The first match gets underway at 11 a.m.
