CLINTON, N.Y. – A last-minute goal by Hamilton College's
Julia Lee '27 and the play of goalie
Eliza Schwarz '27 in the fourth quarter rallied the Continentals to a 9-8 NESCAC win over the Trinity College Bantams at Hamilton's chilly and breezy Steuben Field on Saturday, April 6.
Season Update
- The Continentals (4-4, 3-3 NESCAC) evened their season record and snapped their losing skid at four games.
- Trinity (5-5, 2-4) lost for the fourth time in its last five games.
How It Happened
- Hamilton took possession of the ball with 1:22 left in the fourth quarter when an errant pass by the Bantams rolled out of bounds just outside Trinity's offensive zone.
- After a timeout by the Continentals, they worked the ball around their offensive third until Lee received a pass about 20 yards from the goal with 22 seconds remaining. Lee came down the right wing, deftly split two defenders and cut into the fan. Her overhead shot from about 15 feet away bounced at the goalie's feet and into the back of the net with 16.8 seconds to go for Hamilton's first lead of the afternoon.
- Aine Cleary '25 won the all-important draw control, took the ball deep into the Continentals' offensive zone and intentionally ran out of bounds with just a few seconds left – not enough time for the Bantams to get downfield.
- Schwarz entered the game at the start of the fourth quarter with Hamilton trailing 8-5. She made a save on a free-position shot and stopped another while the Continentals were a player down early in the quarter.
- Lee made it 8-6 on a bouncing shot with 10:39 remaining after she drove hard down the center of the fan while Hamilton was still down a player due to a two-minute yellow card.
- Alex Orlando '25 pulled Hamilton within a goal on a free-position shot with 7:15 to go.
- Trinity's last shot with about 5:20 left was also caught by Schwarz and the Continentals tied the score on their next possession.
- Cleary found Sarah Stonestreet '25 in the middle of the fan five yards from the goal and Stonestreet was immediately surrounded by four defenders. She backed off, took a couple steps to her left and fired a shot into the top-right corner of the net with 4:19 left.
- The Bantams scored the first four goals and also led 7-3 with 5:10 remaining in the third quarter. Trinity held a 4-1 advantage after one and was up 4-2 at the half.
- Hamilton scored six of the last seven goals as the Bantams found the back of the net once in the last 20 minutes.
