Baseball drops NESCAC West Division twinbill at Amherst

Sattinger ’24 had four hits in Game 2 for the Continentals

AMHERST, Mass. – Amherst College totaled 22 hits and the Mammoths swept a NESCAC West Division doubleheader against the Hamilton College Continentals at Amherst's Memorial Field on Saturday, April 6. 
 
Season Update
  • Hamilton (7-9, 1-4 NESCAC West) has lost four straight contests. 
  • Amherst (12-4, 3-2) posted a 5-4 comeback win in the opener and a 13-7 win in game two. 

Game 1

 
How It Happened
  • Hamilton jumped out to a 3-0 lead with three runs in the second on four hits and an error. Charlie O'Brien '24, Jackson Johns '24 and Jack Griffin '24 loaded the bases on three consecutive singles, and Alfonso Rada '27 plated the first run with another base hit. Taylor Kaufman '26 drove in Griffin on a sacrifice fly to right field and Johns scored on a throwing error. 
  • The Continentals plated one more run in the seventh on a lead-off double by Kaufman and a single down the left field line by Shane Dux '24. 
  • The Mammoths stormed back with five runs on three hits, two hit batsmen and two errors in the bottom half. Luke Padian hit the walk-off single down the left field line that scored the tying and winning runs.  
Notes
  • Johns led Hamilton with two hits. 
  • Jackson Sattinger '24 drew a team-best two walks. 
  • Jack Eshleman '25 allowed just one run on five hits, walked two and struck out four batters in 6.1 innings pitched. 
  • Padian, Jack McDermott and Jack Boyle finished with two hits each. 
  • Ryan McIntyre and Charlie LaFrenier both had one hit and one RBI. 
  • Nicholas Giattino tallied three strikeouts in six-plus innings for the Mammoths. 
  • Caron picked up the win on the mound in relief of Giattino in the seventh inning.  

Game 2

 
How It Happened
  • The Mammoths opened the scoring with two runs in their first at-bat. 
  • Hamilton sliced their deficit in half with one run on two hits and an error in the third. Sattinger led off with a single up the middle and scored on a single to center by Griffin. 
  • Amherst added four runs in the bottom half on four hits. 
  • The Continentals countered with two runs on two singles and a triple in the fourth. Greg Kopp '25 singled to right field and Sattinger drove in Kopp on a triple to the gap in right center. Michael Tallarida '26 scored Sattinger on a two-out single through the left side and it was 6-3. 
  • Hamilton inched its way back with another run on a walk and an RBI double down the left field line by Chester Boynton '27. 
  • O'Brien gave the Continentals a 7-6 lead after launching a three-run blast in the sixth. 
  • The Mammoths had their best inning in the seventh with six runs on four hits, three walks and an error. 
  • Amherst stretched its lead to 13-7 with its last run in the eighth on two walks and a sacrifice fly. 
Notes
  • Four of Hamilton's 11 hits went for extra bases. 
  • Sattinger led Hamilton with four hits and three runs scored. 
  • O'Brien registered his first career home run. 
  • Tallarida and Griffin finished with two hits apiece.  
  • Jack Dove plated a team-best five runs on three hits for the Mammoths. 
  • Jack Sampedro had three hits and two RBI. 
  • Javier Irizarry batted in three runs on two hits. 
  • McIntyre finished with two hits. 
  • Amherst's pitching staff combined for six strikeouts. Yoon Chae picked up the win on the bump with three hitless innings.  
Next Game
The Continentals will face the Mammoths for the third game of the NESCAC West Division series on Sunday, April 7 at noon.
