TROY, N.Y. – Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's Brooke Sroczinski recorded the win in Game 1 and earned the save in Game 2 as the Engineers swept a non-conference doubleheader against the Hamilton College Continentals at RPI's Doris Robison Field on Tuesday, April 23.
Season Update
- Hamilton (16-16 overall) was playing its first non-conference games since the Continentals hosted SUNY Cortland back on March 27.
- The nationally ranked No. 16 Engineers (27-2-1) are 8-2 against Liberty League opponents and unbeaten against everyone else.
Game 1 (RPI, 6-1)
How It Happened
- RPI jumped on top early with a run in the bottom of the first inning and two more in the second.
- Hamilton scored its run in the third inning. Ella Heftved '25 drew a one-out walk and came all the way around on a triple to the gap in right-center field by Jordan Merklin '26 as the Continentals pulled within 3-1.
- Hamilton had one base-runner over the last four innings and the Engineers tacked on three insurance runs in the sixth.
Notes
- Merklin finished with two hits including her NESCAC-leading sixth triple. Those six triples have also tied a program single-season record.
- Emma Tansky '25 singled and stole a base for the Continentals. Tansky (7-5) also pitched all six innings and struck out six and walked one.
- Sroczinski (13-0) allowed a run on three hits, fanned five and walked two in seven innings.
- Erin Askins went 3-for-3 with a walk and three runs batted in for RPI. Gabby Comeau also was 3-for-3 and Evann McDowell added two singles.
Game 2 (RPI, 6-5)
How It Happened
- Hamilton took advantage of four errors by the Engineers in the top of the first inning and scored four runs.
- RPI got one run back in the second inning and took the lead with five in the third.
- The Continentals pulled within a run in the sixth. Madison Hinojos '24 led off with a single to right and Merklin put Hinojos on third base with a one-out single up the middle. Tansky's base hit to center field drove in Hinojos and made it 6-5.
- In the seventh Hamilton's Alison Zorn '26 laced a one-out single down the line in left, but Sroczinski got the next two batters to strike out and ground into a fielder's choice.
Notes
- Tansky had two hits and two stolen bases. She also struck out five batters in two scoreless innings of relief. Tansky moved into first place on the team's all-time list with 43 career stolen bases.
- Merklin added two singles and has hit safely in four straight games.
- Zorn and Hinojos contributed two hits apiece. It was the first multi-hit game of Hinojos' Hamilton career.
- Natalie Beebe '24 singled in a run in the first inning.
- Sroczinski recorded the last five outs for her first save this season.
- Sydney Speanburg cleared the bases with a double in the third inning and finished with four RBI.
- Liv Vizzini cracked a two-run homer in the third and Alex Ledger went 3-for-4.
Next Games
The Continentals host Utica University for another non-conference doubleheader on Sunday, April 28. The first game starts at noon. Hamilton will honor its three seniors before the games.
