Women's lacrosse downed at No. 1 Middlebury, 3 goals for Leifer '26

Nine players recorded points for the Continentals

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Middlebury College's Susan Rowley scored four goals and caused three turnovers as the Panthers defeated the Hamilton College Continentals 18-10 in NESCAC action at Middlebury's Peter Kohn Field on Sunday, April 14.
 

Season Update

  • Hamilton (5-6, 4-5 NESCAC) is receiving votes in the ILWomen/Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association Division III Top 25 poll.
  • The Continentals are in seventh place in the conference standings with one NESCAC game remaining. The top eight teams advance to the NESCAC championship quarterfinals.
  • The top-ranked Panthers (13-0, 8-0) have won 41 games in a row.
 

How It Happened

  • Middlebury never trailed but Hamilton forged a 2-2 tie with 7:55 left in the first quarter when Alana King '24 scored on a free-position shot.
  • Rowley gave the Panthers the lead for good 1:19 later with her own free-position goal, and it started a three-goal run for Middlebury.
  • The Panthers led 5-2 at the end of the first quarter. The Continentals didn't get closer than two goals the rest of the way.
  • Middlebury led 10-6 at the half and 15-8 after three quarters. The Panthers went up by as many as nine goals twice in the fourth quarter – at 17-8 and 18-9.
 

Notes

  • Hamilton's Maddigan Leifer '26 tied a career high with three goals.
  • King finished with two goals for her first multi-goal performance since the last game of last season.
  • Sydney Anzelone '27 scored twice and has six of her eight points this season in the last three contests.
  • Abby Smith '24 picked up her first two assists this season and has five points in the last five days.
  • Sarah Stonestreet '25, Kristin Vosswinkel '27 and Julia Lee '27 scored one goal each. Stonestreet has a five-game goal streak intact and Lee leads the team with 18. Vosswinkel scored for the second consecutive game and has five this season.
  • Avery Trach '27 and Sydney Klepper '26 had one assist apiece. Trach recorded a point for the first time since March 20, and Klepper registered her first point in her second game this year.
  • Meghan Lane '24 led all players with six ground balls and caused three turnovers.
  • Eliza Schwarz '27, Casey Fiore '24 and Kaitlin Reed '24 combined to make eight saves for the Continentals. They all played at least 15 minutes each in goal.
  • Hope Shue helped lead the Middlebury offense with five points (3 goals, 2 assists), and Sara Ellinghaus added four points (3 goals, 1 assist).
  • Caroline Adams won 12 draw controls for the Panthers. Gina Driscoll started in goal and stopped five shots, and Elizabeth Savage relieved Driscoll and turned away two shots in the fourth quarter.
  • Hamilton held a slim 32-30 advantage in shots and a 13-12 edge in ground balls, and was credited with just 12 turnovers.
  • Middlebury won 26 of the 31 draw controls and scored eight goals on free-position shots.

The Continentals play a non-conference game at the University of Rochester (8-5 overall) on Wednesday, April 17 at 6 p.m.
