Women's lacrosse shuts down No. 18 Amherst in 9-4 NESCAC win

Lee '27 (three goals) and Leifer '26 (three points) led the Continentals' offense

CLINTON, N.Y. – Hamilton College's Julia Lee '27 scored three goals and the Continentals dominated in the third quarter en route to a 9-4 NESCAC win against the Amherst College Mammoths on Hamilton's breezy and cool Steuben Field on Saturday, March 9.

Season Update

  • The Continentals, who received votes in this week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association Division III Top 25 poll, have two wins in two conference games this season.
  • No. 18 Amherst (1-2, 0-2 NESCAC) has scored just nine goals in its two conference contests.

How It Happened

  • Hamilton trailed 3-2 at the half but came out firing on all cylinders in the third quarter. Maddigan Leifer '26 tied the score on a free-position goal with 12:36 left in the third.
  • Kristin Vosswinkel '27 put the Continentals ahead for good with 10:20 remaining after a decisive drive that started at the top of the 12-meter fan and ended with a hard shot at the right edge of the 8-meter arc from five yards out.
  • Leifer won the ensuing draw control and took the ball around the right side of the Mammoths goal. Suddenly she turned and fired a jump pass to Sarah Creamer '26 who was cutting to the middle of the arc, and Creamer put a shot past the goalie from about five yards away with 10:07 to go.
  • Avery Trach '27 made it 6-3 a little more than two minutes later. Trach took the ball outside the fan, drove down the right side of the arc and buried a shot in the back of the net.
  • Sarah Stonestreet '25 gave Hamilton a four-goal cushion with 6:03 left. Alana King '24 had the ball near the top of the fan and threaded a pass to Stonestreet in the center of the arc. Stonestreet, who was cutting from left to right, turned and whipped a shot into the goal from about five yards away.
  • Bridget Finley finally ended an Amherst scoring drought of 35-plus minutes on a goal with 5:17 remaining in the fourth quarter.
  • The Continentals responded just 43 seconds later. Leifer's pass from outside the fan found Aine Cleary '25 on the right side of the arc. Cleary turned and bounced a right-handed shot into the net from about 20 feet out for an 8-4 lead.
  • Lee clinched the win with 3:13 to go on a drive that started about 20 yards from goal and ended with a shot from point-blank range.
  • Lee scored twice for Hamilton and Finley did the same for the Mammoths as the teams ended the first quarter in a 2-2 tie. Bridget Darcy tallied the lone goal of the second quarter with 11:39 left for Amherst's last lead.
