No. 23 women's lacrosse wins with defense, remains undefeated

Continentals held No. 21 St. John Fisher scoreless for 39 minutes in 11-5 victory

CLINTON, N.Y. – Hamilton College's Aine Cleary '25 scored three goals and added two assists as the Continentals pulled away for an 11-5 non-conference win against the St. John Fisher University Cardinals at Hamilton's warm and sunny Steuben Field on Wednesday, March 13.

Season Update

  • The 23rd-ranked Continentals have opened the season with three straight wins. Hamilton has allowed nine goals in its last two games – both of which were against ranked teams.
  • No. 21 St. John Fisher (0-4 overall) lost by a goal in each of its first three contests. The Cardinals' last three games have been against ranked teams.

How It Happened

  • St. John Fisher's Cara Landry tied the score at 3-3 with 5:37 left in the first quarter. The Continentals held the Cardinals scoreless for the next 39 minutes thanks to a shut-down defense and great goalie play by Kaitlin Reed '24.
  • Hamilton scored the next six goals including four in the second quarter. Cleary started the run with 12:55 left after defender Meghan Lane '24 took the ball nearly the length of the field and fed Cleary in front for the goal.
  • A St. John Fisher player was sent off with a one-minute penalty shortly after the ensuing draw control and Sarah Stonestreet '25 made them pay. Cleary passed to Stonestreet and she made it 5-3 just 47 seconds after Cleary's tally.
  • Stonestreet doubled up the Cardinals on an unassisted goal with 9:44 remaining, and Cleary passed to Sarah Creamer '26 for a 7-3 advantage with 5:34 to go.
  • The run continued in the third quarter. Cleary found the back of the net with 4:50 left and Julia Lee '27 fired a shot past the goalie two minutes later after she received a pass from Stonestreet.
  • Sydney Carpenter finally ended the St. John Fisher scoring drought with 11:33 remaining in the fourth quarter.
  • The Continentals quickly stifled any thoughts of a comeback by the Cardinals. Lane won the draw and Lindsay Kuser '24 took a shot that was stopped by Kaylee Gadol. Creamer picked up the loose ball and passed to Cleary for a goal that made it 10-4 with 11:16 to go.
  • Avery Trach '27 gave Hamilton its largest lead of seven goals at 11-4 with 4:20 left when she scored off a pass from Stonestreet.
