Baseball drops two close NESCAC West Division home games

Continentals nearly rallied to win both against Middlebury

CLINTON, N.Y. – Middlebury College's Kyle McCausland had six hits including three doubles and the Panthers swept a NESCAC West Division doubleheader against the Hamilton College Continentals at Hamilton's Loop Road Athletic Complex on Saturday, March 30.

Season Update

  • The Continentals (7-7, 1-2 NESCAC West) won the first game of the weekend series on Friday, March 29, 4-3.
  • Middlebury (10-7, 2-1) has won four of its last five games.

Game 1 (Middlebury, 6-4)

How It Happened
  • The Panthers had the only run until the bottom of the fifth when Hamilton scored two. Shane Dux '24 doubled and was replaced by pinch-runner Chester Boynton '27. Jackson Johns '24 bunted towards third base and was safe at first, putting runners on the corners with one out. The Continentals pulled off a successful double steal and, with two outs, took a 2-1 lead on an RBI double by Alfonso Rada '27.
  • Middlebury regained the lead with two runs in the top of the sixth and added three insurance runs in the seventh, which was the final inning in the opener.
  • Hamilton tried to rally in its last at-bat. Boynton singled in a run and later scored on a wild pitch as the Continentals pulled within 6-4.
  • With the bases loaded, one out and two strikes on the batter, Taylor Kaufman '26 thought he had been hit by a pitch and forced in a run. The home plate umpire instead ruled he was in the strike zone when the ball hit him and called him out. Panthers shortstop Chris Borter ended the game the next batter with a diving catch on a soft line drive.
Notes
  • Johns was 2-for-2 with a walk and Greg Kopp '25 added two singles.
  • Aidan Regan '24 (2-1) allowed two earned runs on six hits in 5.2 innings. Regan walked one, tied a career high with seven strikeouts and hit two batters. He has a 1.83 earned run average in 19.2 innings this season.
  • McCausland went 3-for-4 with a double, Baker Angstman drove in three runs and stole two bases, and Nathan Samii scored three runs.
  • Winning pitcher Justin Lessing allowed two runs on six hits in 5.2 innings, walked none and struck out four. Andrew Gatland got the last two outs and picked up the save.

Game 2 (Middlebury, 9-8 in 10 inn.)

How It Happened
  • Hamilton took a 3-0 lead with single runs in the first, fourth and fifth innings.
  • Middlebury tied the score with three runs in the top of the sixth, but the Continentals regained the lead with a run in the bottom of the inning.
  • The Panthers exploded for five runs in the eighth and grabbed an 8-4 advantage.
  • Hamilton rallied with four runs in the bottom of the ninth. The Continentals loaded the bases with one out on two walks and a single. Dux made it 8-6 with a two-run single and, after a wild pitch, Johns cut Hamilton's deficit to one on a sacrifice fly. Jack Griffin '24 drove in Dux with a triple that tied the score.
  • With the winning run on third, Middlebury got out of the inning with a ground ball to the third baseman and sent the game to extras.
  • The Panthers took the lead for good with a run in the 10th. The Continentals put the tying run on first with a hit batsman with two outs, but the next batter flied out to center and ended the game.

Notes
  • Dux singled, doubled and drove in two runs. He's second on the team with five doubles.
  • Jackson Sattinger '24 recorded two hits including a double. Sattinger is tied for the NESCAC lead with a .500 batting average (23-of-46).
  • Charlie O'Brien '24 went 2-for-3 and Kopp singled and drew three walks.
  • Michael Tallarida '26 hit a solo home run in the fourth inning. Tallarida is tied for the conference lead with six homers.
  • Griffin's triple was the first of his Hamilton career.
  • Starting pitcher Peter Jones '25 allowed one hit and one walk in 3.2 scoreless innings.
  • McCausland finished with three hits including two doubles and drove in two runs.
  • Beau Root doubled, tripled and plated four runs.
  • Zip Malley went 3-for-4 with two RBI.
  • Gatland (4-0) got the last five outs and didn't allow a run.
