Baseball splits home doubleheader with Clarkson in season opener

Sattinger ’24 knocked in six runs on three hits for the Continentals

CLINTON, N.Y. – Hamilton College's Jackson Sattinger '24 plated the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth in the opener and the Continentals split a non-conference doubleheader against the Clarkson University Golden Knights at Hamilton's Loop Road Athletic Complex on Sunday, March 3. 

Season Update
  • Hamilton (1-1 overall) was playing its first games of the season. 
  • Clarkson, which is a member of the Liberty League for baseball, moved to 2-1 overall. 

Game 1 

 
How It Happened
  • Sattinger led off the fourth with a double to left field and advanced to third on a fly ball to right field by Michael Tallarida '26. With two outs, Sattinger put the Continentals on the board after scoring on a wild pitch. 
  • After three scoreless innings, Clarkson evened things up in the top of the eighth on two hits and one error. 
  • The Continentals quickly countered with the go-ahead run in the bottom half of the inning. Lucas Herman '26 smacked a lead-off single to left field and was replaced by pinch runner Chester Boynton '27, who quickly advanced to second on a wild pitch. Taylor Kaufman '26 moved Boynton over to third on a single through the right side. Tallarida stepped up to the plate and drove in Boynton on a sacrifice fly to center field.   
Notes
  • Tallarida had two of Hamilton's six hits. 
  • Kaufman tallied one hit and stole a team-best two bases. 
  • Herman and Jackson Johns '24 recorded one hit apiece. 
  • Jack Eshleman '25 allowed five hits and one walk while striking out six in seven scoreless innings. Eddie Taylor '25 earned the win on the bump after allowing an unearned run in the eighth inning, and Kenny Rix '25 picked up the save by retiring the side in order in the ninth. 
  • Cam Jerrett led Clarkson with three hits. 
  • Kent Wilson tallied two hits for the Golden Knights.
 

Game 2 


How It Happened
  • Hamilton opened the scoring in its first at-bat with two runs. Kaufman ripped a single to left field and Sattinger cranked a home run to the right of the 400-foot sign in center field.  
  • Clarkson cut its deficit in half with a run in the top of the second. 
  • The Continentals regained its two-run cushion with one run in the third. Kaufman walked, stole both second and third and was knocked in on a sacrifice fly to right field by Sattinger. 
  • The Golden Knights took a 5-3 lead in the fourth with four runs on four hits. 
  • Herman knotted the score with a home run that banged off the left field foul pole in the bottom half. 
  • Clarkson's offense stayed hot with another four runs in the fifth on two singles and two doubles. 
  • Hamilton had its best inning with four runs on five hits in the bottom of the seventh. Alfonso Rada '27 led off with a single to right, Greg Kopp '25 walked and Kaufman hit a single up the middle to load the bases. With no outs, Sattinger ripped a double to deep left field that plated both Rada and Kopp. The Continentals took advantage of a wild pitch that scored Kaufman and advanced Sattinger to third. With two outs, Shane Dux '24 drove in Sattinger on a single to center. 
  • The Continentals nearly tied the game in the ninth inning with runners on the corners after a two-out single up the middle by Dux, but Clarkson secured the final out on a routine ground ball to shortstop.  
Notes
  • Sattinger collected his first home run of the season, hit a double, drew two walks and scored twice. He tied a career high with five runs batted in. 
  • Kaufman plated three runs on two hits, walked once and stole two bases. 
  • Herman smacked his first career home run. 
  • Dux drove in one run on two hits. 
  • Johns, Charlie O'Brien '24 (double) and Rada tallied one hit each. 
  • Aidan Regan '24 scattered five hits and allowed no runs in the final four innings.   
  • Joe Pagano had a team-best three hits, knocked in a pair of runs and scored twice. 
  • Joe Figliolino plated a team-best three runs on a single and a home run. 
  • Wilson drove in two runs on two hits, including one double. 
  • CJ Cartier drove in two runs on two hits and scored twice. 
  • James Mason tallied two hits, drew three walks and scored two runs.
  • Cole Riskin led Clarkson's pitching staff with three strikeouts in four innings pitched. 
  • Carter Gould earned his second win on the mound for the Golden Knights this season with four runs on three hits in two innings.
  • Derrick Lewis secured the save allowing three hits in three scoreless innings of relief. 
  • Clarkson picked up its first win over Hamilton since 2017. 
Next Game
Hamilton will begin its spring break trip down through the Mid-Atlantic Region with a single nine-inning game at nationally ranked No. 8 Johns Hopkins (3-2) on Saturday, March 9 at 2 p.m.
