Tallarida '26, Regan '24 lead baseball to doubleheader split

Continentals cruised to a 9-1 win in the opener at Hampden-Sydney

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – Hamilton College's Michael Tallarida '26 homered twice and tripled as the Continentals split a non-conference doubleheader with the Hampden-Sydney College Tigers at Hampden-Sydney's Yank Bernier Field on Monday, March 11.

Season Update

  • Hamilton (2-2 overall) has played two doubleheaders and won the opener both times.
  • The Tigers (5-7) are 1-3 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, and their win in the nightcap stopped their losing skid at three games.

Game 1 (Hamilton wins, 9-1)

How It Happened
  • The Continentals scored four runs in the top of the second inning and that's all the offense Aidan Regan '24 needed.
  • Jackson Johns '24 laced a one-out double down the left field line and the next two batters walked to load the bases. A single through the right side by Jack Griffin '24 scored Johns, and Taylor Kaufman '26 drew another free pass that forced in the second run. Jackson Sattinger '24 followed with a two-out single between the first and second basemen that drove in two more runs for a 4-0 lead.
  • In the third inning, Griffin hit a fly ball to left field that drove in Johns, who had led off the inning with a walk.
  • Sattinger led off the fourth with an infield single and Tallarida belted a home run over the fence in left for a 7-0 advantage.
  • Regan gave up an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth thanks to his throwing error.
  • Hamilton rounded out the scoring in the sixth. Tallarida led off with a triple to center field, and a hit batsman and a walk loaded the bases. Alfonso Rada '27 was hit by another pitch that plated Tallarida with one out, and Griffin drove in the ninth run on a single to center.
  • Jack Eshleman '25 pitched the last two innings and retired six of the seven batters he faced, including striking out the side in the seventh.

Notes
  • Tallarida scored two runs and drove in two.
  • Griffin went 2-for-3 and tied a career high with three runs batted in.
  • Kaufman tripled and walked twice as the Continentals were issued seven free passes.
  • Rada finished 2-for-2 with a walk.
  • Sattinger singled twice and drove in two runs.
  • Johns scored twice and walked twice.
  • Regan (1-0) scattered six hits through five innings of work as he struck out five and walked none. Regan hasn't allowed an earned run in nine innings this season.
  • Eshleman has given up six hits and fanned nine in nine scoreless innings.

Game 2 (H-S wins, 14-11)

How It Happened
  • Hamilton pitchers issued 13 walks, the defense committed three errors and Hampden-Sydney stole nine bases.
  • The Tigers erased a 9-7 deficit with a six-run fifth inning that started with a two-base error. Aidan Conway drove in the go-ahead run on a single to right field, and the next three runs scored on two bases-loaded walks and a sacrifice fly for a 13-9 lead.
  • The Continentals cut their deficit in half with two runs in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly by Charlie O'Brien '24 and a two-out RBI single up the middle by Greg Kopp '25.
  • Brandon Shelhorse got one of the runs back for Hampden-Sydney with a solo homer to left in the bottom of the inning.
  • Hamilton was retired in order in the seventh.
  • There were three lead changes before the Tigers' big fifth inning. The Continentals took a 3-2 edge with a three-run second and Hampden-Sydney went back up 5-3 with its own three-run inning in the bottom half. Hamilton used the long ball for five runs and an 8-5 advantage in the top of the third.

Notes
  • Rada blasted a three-run homer in the third and ended up with two hits and four runs batted in. The home run is Rada's first with the Continentals.
  • Tallarida hammered a two-run shot to right center in the third inning, scored twice and walked twice. He has eight home runs in 33 career games at Hamilton.
  • Shane Dux '24 went 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored.
  • O'Brien doubled and drove in two runs.
  • Griffin singled and drove in two runs.
