Women’s lacrosse cruises past Bates in season opener, 14-10

Continentals used an early 11-0 run to break things open

LEWISTON, Maine – Hamilton College's Maddigan Leifer '26 and Sarah Creamer '26 scored three goals apiece and the Continentals posted a 14-10 NESCAC win over the Bates College Bobcats on Bates' Garcelon Field on Saturday, March 2. 
 
Season Update
  • Hamilton was competing for the first time this season. 
  • Bates (1-2 overall) was playing its conference opener.  
How It Happened
  • The Bobcats scored just 45 seconds into the opening quarter. 
  • Leifer put Hamilton on the board 1:43 into the first with an unassisted goal after a ground ball pickup. 
  • Bates' Hanna Matthews put the Bobcats back up by one with 9:48 remaining. Less than a minute later, Grace Cassin extended Bates' lead with 8:51 on the clock. 
  • Alex Orlando '25 cut Hamilton's deficit to one on a goal assisted by Avery Trach '27. 
  • The Continentals evened the score on a goal by Aine Cleary '25 assisted by Creamer after a draw control won by Meghan Lane '24 with 6:45 left.
  • Leifer put Hamilton in the lead for good with 5:31 to go. The sophomore displayed fancy footwork, juked a defender and slung a hard shot into the upper left-hand corner.  
  • Creamer made it 5-3 on a feed from Anna Zoccolillo '25 after a ground ball pickup and a sprint down field with just six seconds remaining in the first quarter. 
  • Alana King '24 stretched Hamilton's lead to 6-3 with an unassisted goal 3:56 into the second quarter. 
  • Creamer and Julia Lee '27 put the Continentals up by five with two free-position goals – the first with 8:29 left in the second quarter and the second with 6:55 remaining. 
  • A short 53 seconds later, Sydney Anzelone '27 scored a rebound goal after a free-position shot for a 9-3 advantage with 6:02 to go. 
  • Hamilton owned a commanding 11-3 lead at the half after another goal by Creamer with 3:07 left, and a goal by Trach in the final minute. 
  • Leifer stretched the Continentals' lead to nine at 12-3 on a wraparound goal 1:25 into the third quarter.
  • After 11 consecutive Hamilton goals, the Bobcats found the back of the net with 7:55 to go in the third. 
  • Trach countered with a free-position goal for a 13-4 lead with 5:06 remaining.
  • Caroline Keating scored for the Bobcats with 48 seconds left in the quarter. 
  • Cleary beat the buzzer to give the Continentals a 14-5 cushion heading into the final quarter. 
  • Bates had its best quarter as it outscored Hamilton 5-0 in the fourth for the final margin.  
Notes
  • Leifer finished with a career high in goals and picked up a pair of ground balls. 
  • Creamer recorded a career-high five points with three goals and two helpers. 
  • Trach netted a pair of goals and passed out an assist in her first collegiate contest. 
  • Cleary added two goals and two draws. 
  • Lee and Anzelone tallied their first collegiate goals. 
  • King registered her 38th career goal with the Continentals.
  • Orlando scored her 20th career goal. 
  • Lane led Hamilton with four ground balls and 10 draw controls. 
  • Casey Fiore '24 started in goal and made two saves. Kaitlin Reed '24 relieved Fiore at the start of the third quarter and stopped four shots. 
  • Emma Austin paced Bates with two goals and two assists. 
  • Matthews and Laci Raveis registered two goals on four shots apiece for the Bobcats. 
  • Keating contributed one goal, a team-best four ground balls and four draws. 
  • Avery Lehman tallied nine saves for Bates in 56:25 of action.  
  • The Continentals held a 29-22 shot advantage, and owned a 16-9 edge on draw controls. 
  • Hamilton was successful on all 19 clear attempts.
  • Hamilton and Bates picked up 12 ground balls apiece.

The Continentals host Amherst College (0-1) for another conference contest on Saturday, March 9 at noon.
