Softball splits two non-conference games in Florida

Merklin ’26 finished with three hits for the Continentals

CLERMONT, Fla. – Hamilton College's Emma Tansky '25 collected the win in the circle against the Luther College Norse as the Continentals split two non-conference games at Legends Way Ballfields on Sunday, March 17. 
 
Season Update
  • Hamilton (5-5 overall) defeated Luther 2-1 before the Continentals were edged 4-2 by Smith College. Hamilton wraps up its Florida trip with non-conference games against the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and SUNY Plattsburgh on Monday, March 18. The first pitch of the opener is scheduled for 11:45 a.m.

How It Happened
  • Hamilton struck early with one run in the bottom of the first inning on two hits. Jordan Merklin '26 bunted for a single and stole second base. Natalie Beebe '24 knocked a two-out single between first base and the right fielder that allowed Merklin to score. 
  • The Continentals doubled their lead after two errors in the bottom of the fourth. Beebe reached on a fielding error by the pitcher and Sofia Santana '26 entered as a pinch runner and stole second base. With two outs, Santana rounded the bases on a throwing error by the shortstop. 
  • Luther sliced its deficit in the sixth on two hits and a sacrifice fly. 
  • The Norse had the bases loaded with two outs in the seventh but Tansky shut them down with her fourth strikeout of the afternoon. 
Notes
  • Luther, a member of the American Rivers Conference, moved to 4-4 overall. 
  • Beebe drove in her fourth run of the season. 
  • Merklin stole her first base of the season. 
  • Tansky (2-1) pitched a complete game and collected four strikeouts. She leads Hamilton's staff with 15. 
  • Abby Spore led Luther with two hits. 
  • Olivia Engler tallied seven strikeouts in the circle for the Norse.

How It Happened
  • Scoreless through the first three innings, the Continentals found the scoreboard with one run on three hits in the top of the fourth. Alison Zorn '26 hit a one-out single up the middle and advanced to second on another single up the middle by Charlie Quinn '25. Hadley Rogers '26 walked to load the bases and Julia Hacker '27 scored Zorn on a single through the right side. 
  • The Pioneers countered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth on four hits. 
  • Smith added an insurance run in the sixth on a pair of hits. 
  • Hamilton rallied for one run in the final inning on a lead-off triple by Merklin and a sacrifice fly to left field by Beebe. 
Notes 
  • Merklin went 2-for-4 including her fifth career triple. 
  • Zorn finished with a single and a double. 
  • Hacker went 2-for-3 for her third multi-hit game. 
  • Rogers, Ella Heftved '25 and Santana tallied one single each. 
  • Lucy Helms plated a team-best two runs for the Pioneers. 
  • Taylor Ang recorded two hits including a double. 
  • Both Juno Shantz and Taz Tamai had one hit, one RBI and scored one run. 
  • Emilie Doty earned the complete game win in the circle allowing 10 hits and one walk and striking out three batters.
