No. 8 women's hockey blanks Bowdoin in 2-0 NESCAC win

McGennis '24 posted a goal and an assist for the Continentals

CLINTON, N.Y. – Hamilton College's Claire McGennis '24 had a hand in both goals and Teagan Brown '27 made 20 saves in the Continentals' 2-0 NESCAC win against the Bowdoin College Polar Bears inside Hamilton's Russell Sage Rink on Saturday, Feb. 3.

Season Update

  • The eighth-ranked Continentals (12-4-4, 5-4-3 NESCAC) have lost once in their last 10 games.
  • Bowdoin (8-11-3, 3-8-3) is winless in its last four games.

How It Happened

  • Hamilton owned a 14-5 shot advantage in the first period, but there was no score going into the first intermission.
  • The Continentals started the second period on the power play after one of the Polar Bears was sent to the penalty box for hooking with 21.1 seconds left in the first. Abby Smith '24 made them pay 1:14 into the second. Smith picked up the loose puck in the neutral zone, skated around the outside of the right faceoff circle and behind the net. She emerged by the left post and her wrist shot beat the goaltender high on the blocker side.
  • Hamilton held its 1-0 edge through the end of the second period. Brown kept the shutout intact with back-to-back saves towards the end of a Bowdoin power play about 4:15 into the third. She made the second stop with her right leg as she was sprawled out on the ice.
  • McGennis made it a two-goal cushion at 5:27 of the period. She received a pass in the neutral zone and sped into the attacking zone. Her backhand shot from the bottom of the left faceoff circle snuck underneath the goaltender and into the back of the net.
  • The Polar Bears nearly scored on another power-play chance about nine minutes into the third when a shot deflected off the outside of the right post and Brown stopped a one-timer from the slot by Anyi Sun a few seconds later. Brown turned away 10 shots in the third period.
  • Bowdoin pulled its goaltender for a sixth skater with about 1:15 remaining, but managed just two shot attempts including one on goal.

Notes

  • Brown is third in the NESCAC with a 1.21 goals against average and .947 save percentage. She has four shutouts in 17 starts.
  • McGennis, who finished with a goal and an assist, is tied for third in the conference with 11 goals and leads the Continentals with 13 points.
  • Smith scored her first goal since Jan. 13 and seventh this season.
  • Sami Quackenbush '24 is tied for third in the NESCAC with her 10th assist.
  • Nina Shaikh '24 registered her first helper and point this season.
  • Lisa Ito-Bagshaw '25 picked up her sixth career assist.
  • Bobbi Roca '24 won 14 of 25 faceoffs for Hamilton.
  • Sally Solotaroff-Webber made 25 saves for the Polar Bears, including 14 in the first period.
  • The Continentals were 1-for-2 on the power play and they killed all four of Bowdoin's opportunities.
  • Hamilton is 2-0-2 in the last four meetings with the Polar Bears.
