CLINTON, N.Y. – Hamilton College defender
Sami Quackenbush '24 scored at 6:53 of the third period and the Continentals played to a 1-1 NESCAC tie with the Bowdoin College Polar Bears inside Hamilton's Russell Sage Rink on Friday, Feb. 2.
Season Update
- The eighth-ranked Continentals (11-4-4, 4-4-3 NESCAC) have played four straight overtime games and nine overall this season.
- Bowdoin (8-10-3, 3-7-3) has one win in its last seven contests.
How It Happened
- The Polar Bears took a 1-0 lead with 4:42 left in the first period after a bizarre sequence of events. Bowdoin misplayed a loose puck in the neutral zone and a Polar Bear defender fell down at their own blue line. Hamilton's Nina Shaikh '24 collected the puck in the Continentals' attacking zone and skated in one-on-one with the goaltender. Shaikh released a backhand shot from the low slot that appeared to hit the back of the net for a goal.
- The Hamilton players on the ice celebrated and the clock stopped, but the referee closest to the play ruled the puck hit the crossbar and waved off the goal. Bowdoin's Brett Stoddard took the puck, skated towards the other end of the ice and shot into an empty net as the Continentals' goaltender had left the crease to celebrate by the Hamilton bench. After a lengthy discussion, the four officials ruled that Stoddard's goal counted, and the Polar Bears had the lead.
- Bowdoin held its one-goal edge until Quackenbush's game-tying tally in the third. Quackenbush picked up a loose puck in the Continentals' defensive end near the right-side boards, skated right-to-left through the neutral zone and into Hamilton's attacking zone. She sailed into the left faceoff circle and released a low wrist shot from the faceoff dot that snuck inside the far post. The Continentals finished the period with 21 shots on goal.
- Hamilton's Grace Crowley '26 rang a shot off the right post with 6:50 remaining in the first period.
- The Continentals registered one shot on goal about 20 seconds into the five-minute, sudden-victory extra period. The Polar Bears had three shot attempts in the final minute including two on goal and another that was deflected by Quackenbush.
