Allen '26 scores power-play goal in 1-0 women's hockey win at Utica

Continentals held a commanding 30-8 shot advantage over the Pioneers

UTICA, N.Y. – Hamilton College's Katie Allen '26 scored a power-play goal midway through the second period and the Continentals posted a 1-0 non-conference win against the Utica University Pioneers inside Utica's Nexus Center on Tuesday night, Dec. 10.

Season Update

  • Hamilton (3-4-0 overall) won its third straight game – all on the road. The Continentals have outscored their opponents 8-1 during that stretch.
  • The ninth-ranked Pioneers (9-4-0), who are 3-1 in the United Collegiate Hockey Conference, dropped their third consecutive contest.

How It Happened

  • Utica had two players sent to the penalty box 34 seconds apart in the second period. Hamilton didn't take advantage of its 78 seconds of 5-on-3 power play, but the Continentals scored with 17 seconds left on the 5-on-4. Cuora Sullivan '26 took a shot from above the left faceoff circle and Allen, who was set up in the low slot, tipped the puck past the goaltender 8:59 into the period.
  • Hamilton held a 17-2 shot advantage in the second period and the Pioneers mustered just one shot on goal in the third.
  • Utica wasn't able to pull its goaltender for a sixth skater until the Continentals took a roughing penalty with 16.9 seconds remaining. The Pioneers took their timeout to set up something with their 6-on-4 advantage, but Hamilton's Grace Crowley '26 won the faceoff and Utica didn't even get a shot attempt as the final seconds ticked away.

Notes

  • Allen's goal was her first this season.
  • Sullivan picked up her first assist of 2024-25.
  • Grace Puskar '27 was also credited with an assist as she extended her point streak to three games. Puskar is tied for the team lead with three helpers and four points. She also won 7-of-12 faceoffs.
  • Sophie Berghammer '26 finished with three of the Continentals' six blocked shots.
  • Evie Sheridan '26 only needed to make eight saves to register her second straight shutout and the seventh of her career. Sheridan has a 0.33 goals against average and .978 save percentage in three starts.
  • Hamilton was 1-for-3 on the power play while the Pioneers were 0-for-3. The Continentals notched their first power-play goal this season.
  • Hamilton has killed all 14 of its opponents' power-play opportunities through seven games.
  • The Continentals are 4-0-1 in their last five meetings with Utica. Hamilton also edged the Pioneers 1-0 last season.
  • Angela Hawthorne stopped 29 shots for Utica.
