No. 22 field hockey tripped up by No. 11 Bates, 2-1

Tratnyek '26 scored her second goal and recorded her sixth point this year for the Continentals

CLINTON, N.Y. – Brooke Moloney-Kolenberg and Emma Queen scored for Bates College and the Bobcats hung on for a 2-1 NESCAC win against the Hamilton College Continentals at Hamilton's Goodfriend Field on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 6.

Season Update

  • The 22nd-ranked Continentals (6-4, 3-3 NESCAC) had won their previous three games.
  • Nationally ranked No. 11 Bates (7-3, 4-2) won for the fourth time in its last five contests.

How It Happened

  • Hamilton goalkeeper Abby Griffin '26 had just stopped a shot by Moloney-Kolenberg, but the rebound came out to Rose Gordon who fired the ball towards the cage from outside the arc. Moloney-Kolenberg tipped it past Griffin for a 1-0 lead 3:47 into the first quarter.
  • The Bobcats took half of their 10 shots in the third quarter and they grabbed a two-goal lead with 38 seconds left. The Continentals and second half goalkeeper Kelly Janssen '28 nearly overcame the offensive onslaught, thanks in part to a defensive save by Morgan Clarke '28, until Queen's tip from close range on Anna Cote's shot.
  • Hamilton registered five of its eight shots in the fourth quarter as the Continentals desperately tried to rally. Claire Tratnyek '26 concluded a three-shot flurry with a goal that cut Hamilton's deficit in half with 4:22 remaining. Lilly Truchon '26 started it with a shot that was blocked and Becky Felker '26 took a shot that was knocked away as she fell to the turf. Tratnyek controlled the rebound near the right post and tapped it into the back of the cage.
  • The Continentals pulled Janssen for an 11th field player with 1:48 to go but couldn't get the equalizer.

Notes

  • Tratnyek has two goals and is tied for second on the team with six points.
  • Clarke has both of Hamilton's defensive saves this year.
  • Griffin had two stops in the first half and Janssen turned away three shots in the second.
  • Ava Donohue made four saves for Bates.
  • The Continentals have played six games this year that have ended in 2-1 decisions.
