CLINTON, N.Y. – Colby College's Keon Smart caught a 19-yard pass for the go-ahead touchdown and Christos Tzoumakas kicked three field goals in the Mules' 16-13 NESCAC win against the Hamilton College Continentals at Hamilton's Steuben Field on a sunny and windy Saturday afternoon, Oct. 26.
Season Update
- Hamilton (0-7 NESCAC) held a lead during the second half of all three home games this season.
- Colby (3-4) won for the third time in its last four games.
How It Happened
- Smart came out of the backfield, caught Miles Drake's pass over the middle at around the Continental five-yard line and ran untouched into the end zone with 1:18 left in the fourth quarter. It was the first time either team scored while driving into the wind. Tzoumakas added the extra point for the three-point advantage. The 10-play, 76-yard drive was aided by two defensive pass interference penalties that gave the Mules 30 yards.
- Hamilton started at its own 21 after the ensuing kickoff with the wind at its back and only needed to get into field goal range to have the opportunity to force overtime. Luke Kurzum '27 completed three passes and the Continentals had first down at their own 45 with 29 seconds remaining. After a Hamilton timeout, Kurzum's next pass was picked off by Trevor Smith at the Colby 35, and the Mules clinched the road win.
- Tzoumakas gave Colby a 3-0 lead on a 35-yard field goal 2:44 into the first quarter. The kick was set up by a 27-yard interception return by Nicholas Cox to the Continental 17.
- Tzoumakas made it a six-point cushion on a 28-yard field goal with 1:38 to go in the first. Smart ran for 44 yards on the 10-play, 81-yard march. The Mules caught a break when Hamilton's Tighe Hoey '25 forced wide receiver Jack Nye to fumble at the Colby 32, but the ball rolled out of bounds and the Mules kept possession.
- The Continentals scored all 13 of their points in the second quarter. Carmelo Velardo '27 cut Hamilton's deficit in half on a 31-yard field goal with 8:54 left. The Continentals started with great field position after a 25-yard punt into the wind by Tzoumakas to the Colby 38.
- On the ensuing kickoff, Bryce Molnar '25 forced a fumble by Smart that was recovered by Hamilton's Jack Quinn '28 at the Mules' 31. Kurzum completed a four-yard pass to Chester Boynton '27 on fourth-and-four at the 21 to keep the drive alive. Four plays later on third-and-10 at the Colby 11, Kurzum scrambled up the middle, juked a defender near the five and ran into the end zone untouched. Velardo's PAT put the Continentals in front 10-6 with 4:40 remaining.
- Velardo increased Hamilton's lead to seven points on a 26-yard field goal with 24 seconds to go. The Continentals started their drive in Mules' territory for a third time as a Tzoumakas punt was downed at the Colby 44 after traveling just nine yards.
- The Mules made it 13-9 on the opening drive of the second half. Colby drove down to the Hamilton 18 before it settled for a 37-yard field goal by Tzoumakas with 11:56 left in the third quarter.
