Football shut out in The Old Rocking Chair Classic at Middlebury

Linebacker Fratarcangeli '25 made the most tackles in seven years for the Continentals

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Middlebury College's Brian Moran was 25-of-35 for 254 yards and three touchdowns in the Panthers' 35-0 NESCAC win against the Hamilton College Continentals in the 44th playing of The Old Rocking Chair Classic at Middlebury's Youngman Field at Alumni Stadium on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 2.

Season Update

  • Hamilton (0-8 NESCAC) was shut out for the first time since Oct. 8, 2022.
  • The Panthers (6-2) are tied for third place in the conference standings with one game remaining.

How It Happened

  • Middlebury scored on their first possession as Jeremy Kiefer caught an 11-yard pass for a touchdown with 9:35 left in the first quarter. Zach Levy added the extra point for the 7-0 lead.
  • Connor McClellan scored the Panthers' second touchdown on a one-yard run 1:52 into the second quarter.
  • Middlebury made it 21-0 on a touchdown drive that started at its own 13 with 1:05 remaining in the half. Moran found Kiefer in the end zone from six yards out with just one second to go.
  • The Continentals started their first drive of the second half at their 49 after a long kickoff return by Liam Leonard '26 and a personal foul penalty on the Panthers. The drive stalled at the Middlebury 30 where Hamilton turned it over on downs.
  • The Continentals earned even better field position three plays later when Jake Dale '25 intercepted Moran's pass at the Panthers' 35-yard line. A six-yard touchdown run by quarterback Henry Rubey '26 was wiped out by an offensive holding penalty, and Hamilton eventually missed a 33-yard field goal attempt.
  • The Continentals drove to the Middlebury 42 on their next drive before turning the ball over on downs again. The Panthers took advantage of the short field and scored on a six-yard touchdown catch by Mike Ahonen seven seconds into the fourth quarter. Levy's PAT gave Middlebury a 28-point advantage.
  • Hamilton drove to the Panther 39 on the ensuing possession but turned the ball over on downs for the third time. Middlebury went on a 13-play, 61-yard march that took more than six minutes off the clock and culminated with a two-yard touchdown run by Isaiah Izzo Lizardi with 6:55 left in the fourth.

Notes

  • Rubey was 13-of-25 for 115 yards passing and added 56 more on the ground for the Continentals.
  • Chester Boynton '27 caught three passes and set a Hamilton record for most receptions in a season. Boynton has 58 for 450 yards with two touchdowns. The old record of 55 was shared by Joe Schmidt '20 (2017) and Adam Hodges '97 (1996).
  • Ian Fratarcangeli '25 topped the defense with 16 tackles including 13 solo stops. It was the most tackles by a Continental since Cole Burchill '19 had the same number against Wesleyan University on Sept. 30, 2017.
  • Kyle Bratcher '26 was credited with nine tackles and a pass breakup. Bratcher is ninth in the NESCAC with 52 tackles and tied for third with eight breakups.
  • Dale's interception was the first of the defensive tackle's Hamilton career.
  • Tighe Hoey '25 averaged 42.0 yards on five punts with a long of 52 yards. Hoey is still second in NCAA Division III with an average of 44.54 yards per punt.
  • The Panthers' Patrick Jamin led all players with eight catches for 109 yards receiving.
  • Matt Shaw had a sack, Charlie Ozolin intercepted a pass and Tomas Kenary collected two quarterback hurries.
  • Middlebury finished with 429 yards of total offense to the Continentals' 191.
  • The Panthers, who had the ball for more than 34 minutes, were 8-for-16 on third down and were successful on both of their fourth down conversions.

Next Game

Hamilton hosts Bates College (2-6) in the season finale on Saturday, Nov. 9 at noon. The Continentals will honor the Class of 2025 before the game.
