Volleyball drops two non-conference matches at home

Continentals return to NESCAC action on Friday, Nov. 1 against Williams

CLINTON, N.Y. – The Hamilton College Continentals dropped a pair of non-conference matches against the Wheaton College Lyons (25-16, 25-18, 26-24), and the William Smith College Herons (23-25, 25-17, 25-15, 25-22) inside Hamilton's Margaret Bundy Scott Field House on Saturday, Oct. 26. 
 

Season Update

  • Hamilton (4-13 overall) extended its losing streak to five matches. 
  • Wheaton (8-18) is 0-8 in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference.  
  • William Smith (18-3), which received votes in the AVCA Division III Top 25 poll, is 6-1 in the Liberty League.

How It Happened
  • Wheaton started set one off hot with a 5-0 run and turned it into an 8-2 advantage. The Continentals hit a 4-0 spurt with three Wheaton errors and a kill by Allie Steel '28 and trailed 10-7. With a 14-11 lead, the Lyons scored eight of the next 10 points for a 22-13 cushion and claimed the opening set win with a kill. 
  • The Lyons scored four straight points for a 9-5 lead in set two. Hamilton countered with five of the next six points and evened the score at 10-10. The Continentals held a slight edge on the Lyons, but Wheaton gained momentum with a 3-0 rally for an 18-16 advantage. Elodie McGeiver '27 attempted to swing the energy back to the Continentals with the next kill, but the Lyons ran off for three straight points again for a 21-17 lead. Wheaton closed out the set with four straight points. 
  • The Continentals used a 5-0 run, with three points coming on kills by Cate Iven '25, Drew Stimson '25 and McGeiver, for a 7-4 advantage in the third set. After the Lyons responded with a 7-0 spurt for an 11-7 lead, Hamilton fought its way back and knotted the score at 11-11. The Continentals trailed 19-14 before rattling off the next six points for a 20-19 edge. Hamilton was two points away from forcing a fourth set, but the Lyons clinched the sweep by securing six of the final seven points. 
Notes
  • Stimson led Hamilton with eight kills, two blocks and two service aces. 
  • Pati Cerda '26 handed out a team-best 10 assists and added a pair of blocks. 
  • Mia Jessen '28 tallied a team-high 15 digs, while Ayzlinn Trefren '28 had 14. 
  • Celina Henn tallied a double-double for the Lyons with 16 kills and 11 digs. 
  • Ajsa Orban passed out 38 assists.
  • Arianna Tanksley recorded a match-best three service aces for Wheaton.
  • Hollis Hanson stuffed a team-high three blocks. 
  • Lillie Zickert registered 16 digs for the Lyons.

How It Happened
  • Hamilton stormed back from behind and outlasted the Herons in an intense first set. The Continentals trailed 17-12 before cutting their deficit to just one point at 18-17. The Herons were clinging to a two-point lead at 20-18, but Hamilton pocketed five of the next six points on three William Smith errors and kills by McGeiver and Caitlin Allen '27 for a 23-21 advantage. Hamilton and William Smith traded the next two points, and the Continentals took set one on a service error. 
  • The Herons used a 5-0 run for a comfortable 20-12 cushion in the second set. William Smith led by at least five points the rest of the way and evened the match. 
  • Tied 3-3 in the third set, the Herons gained control with five consecutive points. Hamilton stayed close at 9-7 after kills by Claire Cooper '26 and McGeiver, along with a William Smith attack error, but the Herons halted the Continentals rally with a quick 3-0 run. William Smith still held a 14-12 edge when it scored six of the next seven points for a comfortable 20-13 lead and cruised from there. 
  • Hamilton trailed 18-14 in the fourth set but put the crowd on its feet with three consecutive kills and a William Smith attack error for an 18-18 deadlock. The Herons regained their composure and scored the next three points for a 21-18 lead. The Continentals didn't get closer than two points the rest of the set. 
Notes
  • Stimson finished with a team-best 13 kills and four blocks.
  • McGeiver tallied a double-double with 10 kills and 14 digs. 
  • Allen stuffed a team-high five blocks. 
  • Cerda and Cooper combined for 30 assists with 15 apiece. Cooper also chipped in a career-best three blocks. 
  • Jessen registered a team-best 17 digs. 
  • Trefren had eight kills, 16 digs and the Continentals' only service ace. 
  • Malya Sayre recorded 16 kills and 18 digs for the Herons. 
  • Hope Von Dohlen slammed 16 kills and had two blocks. 
  • Marin Montagne recorded a match-high five service aces. 
  • Delainy Williams tallied 45 assists and four service aces. 
  • Kali Vanderhoof contributed 17 digs. 

Next Match

Hamilton hosts Williams College (10-10, 3-5 NESCAC) in NESCAC action on Friday, Nov. 1 at 7:30 p.m.
