Women’s soccer drops match at Union, Harvey ’28 scores fifth goal

Continentals had won the last three meetings with the Garnet Chargers

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Union College's Sam Friedman and Addison MacDonald scored second half goals and lifted the Garnet Chargers to a 2-1 non-conference win against the Hamilton College Continentals at Union's College Park Field on Sunday, Oct. 13.

Season Update

  • Hamilton (5-5-2 overall) had won its previous two Sunday matches this season.
  • Union (8-2-4) extended its unbeaten streak to five matches.

How It Happened

  • After a scoreless first half, the Garnet Chargers found the net in the 59th minute thanks to Friedman with an assist from Ashley Sheldon. During a counterattack, Sheldon delivered a pass to Friedman just outside the 18-yard box, drawing Hamilton's goalkeeper out of position. Friedman beat everyone to the ball, made a move around the keeper, and had a wide-open shot into the middle of the net.
  • In the 78th minute, Union almost doubled its lead on an indirect free kick, but the referee ruled that there was interference with the goalkeeper. The Garnet Chargers secured the two-goal advantage less than a minute later on a goal by MacDonald, set up by a corner kick.
  • Less than two minutes later, the Continentals sliced their deficit in half on a goal by Isabel Harvey '28 with 10:15 left. Harvey received a pass nearly 40 yards out on the far side of the field and crossed over her defender. She moved into the center of the 18-yard box and unleashed a shot from the penalty spot that found the lower-right corner of the net.
  • Maddie Ledbury '26 put up Hamilton's final attempt with 2:19 remaining, but Union's Maya Koster made the save.
  • Hamilton outshot Union 14-12, but the Garnet Chargers posted eight shots on goal to Hamilton's five.
  • The Continentals carried a 10-3 advantage on corner kicks.

Notes

  • Harvey registered her fifth goal of the season.
  • Kate Giglio '28, Erin Rayhill '25 and Ledbury put one shot on net each. Harvey had the other two.
  • Nieve Tonna '26 tallied six saves for the Continentals.
  • Koster made four stops for Union.
  • Hamilton had won the last three meetings with the Garnet Chargers.
