MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Wesleyan University's Morgan Mattson had 15 kills and 21 digs as the Cardinals defeated the Hamilton College Continentals in four sets (25-16, 22-25, 25-23, 25-12) inside Wesleyan's Silloway Gymnasium on Friday, Oct. 11.
Season Update
- Hamilton (4-9, 1-5 NESCAC) remained winless away from home this season.
- Wesleyan (10-5, 4-1) has won seven of its last eight matches.
How It Happened
- Wesleyan jumped out to a 9-5 lead in the first set and used a 6-0 run for a 19-9 cushion. Hamilton scored the next five points, but a string of four attack errors put Wesleyan up 23-14. The Cardinals sealed the opening set on back-to-back kills.
- The Continentals kicked off the second set with the first six points. After a kill by Drew Stimson '25 and a hitting error by the Cardinals, the Continentals led 12-5. Hamilton maintained its lead for the remainder of the set. Although Wesleyan closed the gap to 23-22, a kill by Elodie McGeiver '27 and a crucial block by Caitlin Allen '27 and Pati Cerda '26 allowed the Continentals to even the match at one set apiece.
- Tied at 7-7 in the third set, McGeiver slammed three kills, Allen and Allie Steel '28 stuffed a block, and Cerda served an ace, as the Continentals pulled ahead 13-8. Wesleyan rallied for a 17-15 lead with five consecutive points. After seven ties the score was knotted at 23-23, but Wesleyan secured the third set with a kill and an ace.
- The score was even at 9-9 in the fourth set, but Wesleyan gained momentum by scoring 12 of the next 13 points for a comfortable 22-11 cushion. The Cardinals eventually clinched the match with a kill.
Notes
- McGeiver recorded her seventh double-double this season with a team-best 14 kills and a career-high 20 digs. She also added three blocks.
- Allen stuffed a season-best seven blocks.
- Cerda paced the Continentals with 39 assists and two service aces.
- Ayzlinn Trefren '28 chipped in 10 kills and a season-high 26 digs for her fourth double-double.
- Drew Stimson '25 collected eight kills.
- Mia Jessen '28 finished with 20 digs -- the third time she's had 20 or more in a match.
- Mattson and Michelle Jorba led Wesleyan with 15 kills apiece.
- Bianca Gonya collected nine blocks for Wesleyan, while Fiona LaCamera tallied five.
- Ali Landa handed out 28 assists for the Cardinals.
