No. 7 women's hockey picks up road win against ranked opponent

Katz '24 scored the go-ahead goal late in the third period of a 4-2 victory at Elmira

PINE VALLEY, N.Y. – Hamilton College's Zoe Katz '24 scored the go-ahead goal with 5:10 left in the third period and the Continentals went on to a 4-2 non-conference win against the Elmira College Soaring Eagles at Elmira's Murray Athletic Center Ice Arena on Tuesday, Jan. 9.

Season Update

  • Nationally ranked No. 7 Hamilton (8-3-1 overall) handed the Soaring Eagles their first loss in six games at home.
  • No. 11 Elmira (10-4) had shut out its previous two opponents.

How It Happened

  • Sami Quackenbush '24 released a shot from the blue line above the left faceoff circle and the goaltender stopped it but the puck bounced out in front. Several players took a whack at it and the puck ended up in the crease where Katz poked it over the goal line.
  • Quackenbush clinched the win on an empty-net goal with 1:01 remaining. The Continentals took their lone penalty with 2:59 to go and the Soaring Eagles pulled their goaltender for a 6-on-4 advantage with about 1:30 left. Late in Hamilton's penalty kill, Bobbi Roca '24 won a defensive zone faceoff back to Quackenbush and her clear attempt from the goal line sailed all the way down the ice and into the empty net. The short-handed goal was the team's first this season.
  • The Continentals took a 1-0 lead 2:38 into the first period. Lydia Bullock '26 intercepted a pass in front of the Hamilton bench and carried the puck all the way down around the end boards. Bullock threw a pass out in front from behind the net to Abby Weiss '25 and she ripped a one-timer from the left side of the right faceoff circle.
  • The Continentals earned their only power play of the night late in the first and they took advantage of it. Sophie Berghammer '26 took a shot from above the left faceoff circle and Roca, who was in the slot, reached out her stick and tipped the puck into the top-right corner of the net with 52 seconds remaining.
  • Elmira pulled within 2-1 with 6:10 to go in the second period on a goal by MK Boyle. Madi Morton, who had the assist on Boyle's goal, tied the score just 22 seconds into the third period.

Notes

  • Roca finished with a goal and an assist for the second multi-point game of her Hamilton career. She also won 9 of 15 faceoffs.
  • Katz's goal was the second of her career with the Continentals.
  • Weiss scored for the second time in her career.
  • Quackenbush recorded her first goal this season and is tied for the team lead with nine points.
  • Abby Smith '24 picked up an assist for her ninth point.
  • Berghammer and Grace Crowley '26 registered assists for the second straight game.
  • Hamilton's Teagan Brown '27 made a season-high 33 saves including 16 in the second period. Brown has a .940 save percentage and 1.39 goals against average in 10 starts.
  • Leonie Kuehberger turned away 25 shots for the Soaring Eagles.
  • The Continentals have won two straight against Elmira after a 6-3 victory last season.
  • Hamilton has capitalized on nearly 31 percent of its power-play opportunities while allowing just two power-play goals this season.
