Smith '24 lifts women's hockey to overtime win at Colby, 3-2

Senior scored the game-winner in the extra period for the second time this season

WATERVILLE, Maine – Hamilton College's Abby Smith '24 scored 27 seconds into the sudden-victory overtime period and lifted the Continentals to a 3-2 win over the Colby College Mules inside Colby's Jack Kelley Rink on Saturday, Jan. 6.

Season Update

  • Nationally ranked No. 7 Hamilton (7-3-1, 2-3-1 NESCAC) was on the road this weekend for the first time this season after opening with nine straight home games.
  • The 11th-ranked Mules (8-2-0, 2-2) had won their previous five games, including 2-1 against the Continentals on Friday night.

How It Happened

  • Smith gained control of the loose puck in Hamilton's attacking zone and skated with it for about 10 seconds. She finally released a shot from the left side of the right faceoff circle that slipped under the goaltender's right pad.
  • After a scoreless first period the Continentals grabbed a 1-0 lead 6:53 into the second. Sophia Testa '26 took a shot from the point and the puck deflected over to Katie Allen '26 below the left faceoff circle. Allen passed over to Ali Joseph '25 near the right post for a shot into the open net.
  • Sophie Melsness drew Colby even 2:11 later on assists by Meg Rittenhouse and Georgia Pettygrove.
  • Lydia Bullock '26 put Hamilton back in front with 6:57 left in the second. Bullock won an offensive zone faceoff back to Sophie Berghammer '26 and her shot from the left point was turned aside. Grace Crowley '26 retrieved the loose puck below the goal line and backhanded a centering pass to Bullock in the low slot where she hammered a one-timer into the back of the net.
  • Rittenhouse tied the score again for the Mules at 3:56 of the third period on an assist from Alex Thomas.
  • The Continentals had a golden opportunity to take the lead again near the end of regulation when a Colby player was sent to the penalty box for slashing with 3:22 remaining in the third period. Hamilton had three shot attempts including two on goal during its power play.

Notes

  • Smith is tied for the team lead with eight points on five goals and three assists. Her last three goals were all game-winners, including two in overtime.
  • Joseph scored the first goal of her career with the Continentals. She recorded her first collegiate point – an assist – on Friday night.
  • Bullock scored her second goal this season.
  • Allen registered her second point in the last three games.
  • Teagan Brown '27 made 10 of her 21 saves in the third period. Brown has a 1.33 goals against average and .939 save percentage in nine starts.
  • Hamilton blocked 15 shots and was led by Sophia Rodham '27 with four. Berghammer added three.
  • Paige Bolyard stopped 31 shots for the Mules.
  • Both teams were 0-for-2 on the power play.
