Men’s basketball edged in double OT by Wesleyan, 89-83

Tight NESCAC contest featured 14 ties and 26 lead changes

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Wesleyan University's Shane Regan finished with 31 points, including a 3-pointer early in the second overtime that gave the Cardinals the lead for good, and Wesleyan escaped with an 89-83 NESCAC win against the Hamilton College Continentals inside the Cardinals' Silloway Gymnasium on Saturday, Jan. 27. 
 
Season Update
  • Hamilton (9-11, 3-4 NESCAC) dropped its fourth consecutive game. 
  • Wesleyan (12-8, 3-3) picked up its second win in the last six contests. 
How It Happened
  • Regan opened the second overtime with a shot from beyond the arc and then hit a pair at the line to put the Cardinals up 82-77 with 3:14 left. 
  • Wesleyan's Jared Langs sank one free throw for an 83-77 advantage with less than three minutes remaining. 
  • Hank Morgan '25 cut Hamilton's deficit to four with two shots at the line.
  • Teja Singh '25 drained a jumper in the paint and pulled the Continentals within three points at 84-81 with 1:17 to go. 
  • The Continentals got as close as one point at 84-83 on a pair at the line by Garret Keyhani '26 with 35 ticks left. 
  • The Cardinals closed out the final seconds with five straight points for the final margin. 
  • After five lead changes in the first extra period, Jalen Reese '27 put Hamilton up 77-76 on a layup with 21 seconds remaining. 
  • With just one second left, Wesleyan's Sam Pohlman was fouled and hit one free throw to knot the score at 77-77 and force a second overtime. 
  • In the second half the Cardinals stretched their lead to eight points at 59-51 on a dunk by Langs with 5:52 remaining. 
  • Singh buried a 3-ball to cut Hamilton's deficit to five points, but Regan countered with a jumper for a 61-54 lead. 
  • Morgan went to work and chipped away at Wesleyan's lead with a pair of 3-pointers and two layups to trail by just one point at 65-64 with 1:27 left. 
  • Owen Kane '25 capped Hamilton's 12-4 spurt with a layup for a 66-65 advantage with 28 seconds remaining. 
  • Regan answered with a jumper and completed the three-point play at the line to regain the lead at 68-66 with 16 ticks to go. 
  • Morgan was fouled on a drive and hit both shots at the line to even the score at 68-68. 
  • With less than a second left, Wesleyan attempted a game-winning jumper but it was no good. 
  • Hamilton held a 10-7 lead in the opening five minutes. 
  • The Cardinals responded with an 8-0 run for a 15-10 advantage with 11:32 left on the clock. 
  • The Continentals answered with six straight points for a 16-15 lead midway through the first half. 
  • With nine lead changes and seven ties, neither team led by more than two points over the span of the final 9:01 as the Cardinals carried a 34-33 edge at the break. 
  • Hamilton shot 47.7 percent (31-65) from the field and went 13-for-19 at the line. 
  • Wesleyan shot 42.6 percent (29-68) from the floor, including 9 of 20 from 3-point range, and went 22-for-32 at the charity stripe. 
  • The Cardinals held a 44-36 advantage on the glass that included 16 offensive boards.
  • Wesleyan owned a 38-5 advantage in points off the bench. 
Notes
  • Morgan tied a career high with 30 points and leads the NESCAC with 18.9 per game. 
  • Keyhani dropped in 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
  • Singh chipped in 14 points, four assists and a career-high three blocks.  
  • Kane added seven points, seven rebounds and four assists. 
  • Reese finished with seven points, four assists and two blocks. 
  • Regan handed out a game-high eight assists.
  • Langs registered 18 points and 11 rebounds off the bench. 
  • Fritz Hauser recorded 12 points on four 3-pointers.
  • Ben Lyttle grabbed nine rebounds in just 17 minutes. 
  • Nicky Johnson tallied 10 points and five assists. 
  • Jackson Cormier contributed 10 points and five boards.
