Women’s basketball rallies past No. 22 Amherst, 53-49

Continentals sparked a 12-0 run late in the fourth quarter

CLINTON, N.Y. – Hamilton College's Taylor Lambo '26 and Emily Hall '24 combined for 37 points as the Continentals posted a 53-49 comeback victory against the Amherst College Mammoths on Hamilton's Coach Tom Murphy Court inside Margaret Bundy Scott Field House on Saturday, Jan. 20. 
 
Season Update
  • Hamilton (14-5, 2-3 NESCAC) earned its fourth straight win over Amherst.  
  • Amherst (13-4, 2-3) is ranked 22nd in the D3hoops.com Top 25 poll and received votes in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Top 25 poll. 
How It Happened
  • Courtney Shay '24 hit a big-time 3-ball from the corner on a pass from Maria Mercado Rengel '24 and the Continentals took off on a 12-0 run that turned a 47-39 deficit into a 51-47 lead capped by a baseline jumper from Shay with 48 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. 
  • Sylvia Liddle cut Hamilton's lead in half on a mid-range jumper with 22 seconds left. 
  • Amherst was forced to foul and Hall closed out the scoring with two shots at the line. 
  • After another Amherst timeout, the Mammoths attempted two 3-pointers but failed to connect. 
  • Amherst's Kori Barach nailed a 3-pointer to start the fourth quarter for a 39-33 lead with 9:46 left to play. 
  • Hall hit a pair at the line and Lambo drained another jumper to trail by two points at 39-37 with 8:09 on the clock. 
  • Amherst rattled off the next five points for a seven-point lead at 44-37. 
  • The Mammoths led by as many eight points in the final quarter at 47-39 with 5:21 remaining. 
  • The Continentals opened the third quarter with back-to-back baskets by Shay and Lambo to even the score at 19-19. 
  • Lambo stormed her way through the paint for a layup and finished the classic three-point play at the line for a 22-21 lead with 8:25 left. 
  • Tied 23-23, Barach buried a jumper and a 3-pointer to give the Mammoths a 28-23 edge with just under six minutes left in the third stanza. 
  • Trailing 32-25, the Continentals pulled within two points on a layup from Hall and an old-fashioned three-point play from Piper Seamon '24. 
  • Reeya Patel responded with a jumper at the other end, but Althea Hill '26 swished a shot from beyond the arc and drew the Continentals within one point at 34-33 with 2:29 to go. 
  • The Mammoths closed out the third frame with two free throws for a 36-33 advantage. 
  • Hamilton's defense proved itself in the second quarter, holding Amherst to just five points and slashing its deficit to four points at 19-15 at the break.
  • The Mammoths netted two fast-break layups for a quick 4-0 advantage less than two minutes into the opening quarter.
  • Amherst held its largest lead of 10 points at 14-4 with 3:09 left. 
  • Lambo hit her fifth free throw of the quarter for a nine-point deficit heading into the second quarter. 
  • Hamilton shot 26.2 percent (16-61) from the field and went 19-for-30 at the line. The Continentals tallied 20 points on 17 Amherst turnovers. 
  • Amherst shot 32.3 percent (21-65) from the floor, including 4 of 25 from 3-point range and 3-for-5 at the charity stripe. 
  • Hamilton owned a 51-41 advantage on the glass.   
Notes
  • Lambo shot 6 of 11 from the floor and went 7-for-13 at the line for a team-high 19 points. She added eight rebounds and passed out a career-high five assists. 
  • Hall finished with 18 points, eight rebounds and three assists. 
  • Seamon grabbed a team-best nine rebounds. 
  • Shay scored all seven of her points in the second half. 
  • Barach led Amherst with 19 points. 
  • Liddle tallied 12 points and a team-best nine rebounds. 
  • Alix Stuart gathered eight boards and blocked five shots off the bench.
  • Laura Mendell recorded a team-high six assists and made three steals. 
Next Game
The Continentals return to Margaret Bundy Scott Field House for another NESCAC matchup against Trinity (11-5, 2-1) on Friday, Jan. 26 at 7 p.m.
