Men’s basketball tripped up at Amherst in OT, Keyhani '26 drops in 23

Sophomore guard scored in double digits for the 13th time for the Continentals

AMHERST, Mass. – Chris Hammond put Amherst College ahead for good with the first basket of overtime and finished with 14 points as the Mammoths posted a 71-67 NESCAC win against the Hamilton College Continentals inside Amherst's LeFrak Gymnasium on Saturday, Jan. 20. 
 
Season Update
  • Hamilton moved to 9-8 overall and 3-2 in the NESCAC.
  • Amherst (12-7, 3-2) picked up its fourth straight win.  
How It Happened
  • In overtime, Hammond and Bobby Sommers put the Mammoths up 67-63 on back-to-back layups. 
  • Garret Keyhani '26 made a steal and Hank Morgan '25 connected on a pass from Owen Kane '25 for a dunk to slash Amherst's advantage in half with 2:40 left to play.
  • Hammond nailed another jumper and Morgan responded to trail 69-67 with 51 seconds left on the clock. 
  • Christian McDaniel '24 made a crucial steal, but the Continentals missed two shots and were forced to send Amherst to the line. 
  • Trailing 70-67 with only 20 seconds remaining, Hamilton held possession and eventually attempted a 3-pointer with one second left but it failed to fall.  
  • Sommers closed out the scoring with a shot at the line for the final margin. 
  • After trading baskets back-and-forth, Keyhani was fouled and hit one free throw to give Hamilton a 63-61 lead with 24 ticks to go. 
  • The Mammoths called a timeout with six seconds left and C.J. Mitchell scored a layup with less than two seconds remaining to force overtime. 
  • The Continentals started the second half on a 8-0 run led by Singh and Keyhani for a 13-point lead at 40-27 with 14:46 on the clock. 
  • Hamilton led by as many as 14 points at 50-36 midway through the second half. 
  • The Mammoths stormed back and rallied for 10 straight points to cut its deficit to four points at 50-46. 
  • Morgan and Keyhani both knocked down a pair of shots at the line for a 54-46 advantage with 8:03 remaining. 
  • Amherst scored the next five points over the next 3:12 to trail by just three points at 54-51 with 4:13 to go. 
  • Teja Singh '25 stretched Hamilton's lead back out to five with two free throws, but Hammond netted a 3-pointer for the Mammoths to cut the Continentals' lead to 56-54 with just under three minutes left. 
  • Amherst quickly jumped out to a 6-0 lead within the first three minutes. 
  • Morgan buried his first 3-pointer of the contest and Singh nailed a jumper to pull Hamilton within three points at 8-5 with 15:06 left on the clock. 
  • Amherst's Vance Ryker hit two shots at the charity stripe for a 12-6 lead. 
  • The Continentals ignited a 9-2 run to knot the score at 16-16 with 6:28 remaining. 
  • The Mammoths owned a 19-16 lead after two trips to the line with 5:25 to go. 
  • Trailing 24-23, Morgan and Singh combined for the next six points for a 29-24 advantage with 47 seconds left. 
  • C.J. Mitchell slashed Amherst's deficit in half, but Keyhani countered with a 3-pointer for a 32-27 lead at the break. 
  • Hamilton shot 36.1 percent (22-61), 28.6 percent (6-21) from beyond the arc, and went 17-for-24 at the charity stripe. 
  • Amherst shot 39.1 percent (27-69) from the floor, including 7 of 22 from 3-point range, and went 10-for-17 at the line. 
  • Amherst held a 50-34 advantage on the glass. 
  • The Mammoths received 32 points from its bench to Hamilton's five.  
Notes
  • Keyhani went 7-for-9 at the line and finished with a team-high 23 points, eight rebounds, tied a career high with three blocks and came up with a career-high five steals. 
  • Singh shot 6 of 12 from the floor, including 3 of 5 from 3-point land, and went 5-for-7 at the charity stripe for a total of 20 points. 
  • Morgan registered 19 points and three assists and made a career-high five steals. 
  • Kane handed out a team-best five assists. He is third in the conference with 3.5 per game.
  • Scherer tallied 11 points, a team-high 14 rebounds, four assists and three blocks for the Mammoths. 
  • Bobby Sommers recorded 12 points, 10 boards and three steals off the bench. 
  • Mitchell chipped in eight points.

Hamilton hosts local opponent SUNY Polytechnic (10-7) on Sunday, Jan. 21 at 5 p.m.
