Men’s basketball puts away pesky Bates team late for NESCAC win

Three Continentals scored 20 or more points in the 80-71 victory

CLINTON, N.Y. – Hamilton College's Hank Morgan '25 netted 26 points and the Continentals posted an 80-71 NESCAC win against the Bates College Bobcats at Hamilton's Coach Tom Murphy Court inside Margaret Bundy Scott Field House on Friday, Jan. 12. 
 
Season Update
  • Hamilton (7-7, 2-1 NESCAC) won for the third time in its last four games.
  • Bates (2-12, 0-2) dropped its fourth straight contest. 
How It Happened
  • Tied 47-47, Owen Kane '25 made a layup on a pass from Jalen Reese '27 and put the Continentals ahead for good with 7:43 remaining.
  • The Bobcats started the second half with a 7-0 run for a 31-30 edge with 18 minutes left. 
  • Bates' Elliott Cravitz hit two shots at the line and pulled the Bobcats within a point at 50-49 with 7:23 to go. 
  • Hamilton was clinging to a two-point lead at 55-53 with 5:11 remaining but Teja Singh '25 scored all eight points in an 8-2 spurt for a more comfortable 63-55 advantage with 3:49 left. 
  • Bates was still within six at 65-59 with 2:56 to go, but Morgan hit another shot from 3-point land and Kane netted a pair from the line for Hamilton's largest lead of 11 points at 70-59 with 1:13 remaining.
  • The Continentals went 12-for-14 at the charity stripe in the final 73 seconds. 
  • There were seven lead changes in the first half and neither team led by more than five points until late. Peter Psyhogeos made a shot from long distance and gave the Bobcats a 15-14 edge with 10:32 remaining.
  • After Morgan pulled Hamilton within a point at 18-17 on a trifecta, Trace Gotham scored Bates' next four points for its largest lead at 22-17 with 6:05 left. 
  • Hamilton proceeded to score the next 13 points capped by a jumper by Morgan with 1:49 to go. Morgan, Singh and Garret Keyhani '26 accounted for all the points during the Continentals' run.
  • Simon McCormick closed out the first half with two shots at the line and cut the Bobcats' deficit to 30-24. 
  • Hamilton shot 36.2 percent (25-69) from the field, including 30.8 percent (8-26) from the 3-point line, and went 22-for-27 (81.5 percent) at the line. 
  • Bates shot 30 percent (9-30) from the floor in the first half. For the game, the Bobcats were 39.1 percent (9-23) from beyond the arc and 72 percent (18-25) at the charity stripe. 
  • The Continentals gathered 17 points off 17 Bates turnovers.  
Notes
  • Morgan tallied 20-plus points for the fifth time this season and added seven rebounds, four assists and two steals. He is third in the NESCAC with 17.7 points per game. 
  • Singh poured in 20 points and handed out four assists. 
  • Keyhani registered 20 points, seven boards and a team-best five assists. 
  • Kane contributed nine points, a team-high eight rebounds and two blocked shots. 
  • Reese also blocked two shots as Hamilton, which leads the NESCAC in the category, finished with six. 
  • Marc Begin II led Bates with 23 points and four assists. 
  • Cravitz notched 15 points. 
  • Babacar Pouye chipped in 14 points and a game-high nine boards for the Bobcats.

Hamilton hosts nationally ranked No. 14 Tufts University (13-3, 0-2) on Saturday, Jan. 13 at 3 p.m.
