No. 24 field hockey cruises to 3-1 season-opening win at RPI

Continentals received goals from three players and allowed just one shot

TROY, N.Y. – Hamilton College received goals from three different players and the Continentals opened the 2023 season with a 3-1 non-conference win against the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Engineers at RPI's Harkness Field on Tuesday, Sept. 5.
 

Season Update

  • Hamilton is ranked 24th in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III Top 25 Preseason poll.
  • The Engineers, who are members of the Liberty League, dropped to 0-3 overall.
 

How It Happened

  • The Continentals dominated possession from the start and finally cashed in with 2:10 left in the first quarter on a goal by Becca Munoz '25.
  • Hamilton turned RPI's first penalty corner into a counter-attack chance more than five minutes into the second quarter. Claire Tratnyek '26 finished off the play with a goal off a pass from Sammy Higgins '26 with 9:09 remaining.
  • The score remained 2-0 into the fourth quarter, but after four corners and four shots by the Continentals in the opening minute, Hamilton increased its lead to three with 11:51 to go when Hannah Dillon '24 found Delaney Grace '25 for the goal.
  • Rachel Banister scored the Engineers' goal on a penalty corner less than a minute later while the Continentals were down a player due to a green card. The goal was RPI's only shot of the contest.

  • Hamilton held a commanding 27-1 shot advantage.
  • The Continentals were awarded 10 penalty corners to the Engineers' three.
  • Hamilton has won the last six meetings with RPI.
  • Munoz scored her second career goal.
  • Alana King '24 registered her seventh career assist and 19th career point.
  • Tratnyek tallied her second goal with the Continentals.
  • Higgins picked up her second point at Hamilton.
  • Grace now has 20 career points for the Continentals.
  • Dillon, who led the team in points in 2022, has 11 assists and 23 points at Hamilton.
  • Abby Griffin '26 didn't have to make a save as she collected the win in goal.

The Continentals host No. 9 Trinity College for their NESCAC and home opener on Saturday, Sept. 9 at noon.
