No. 24 field hockey edges No. 9 Trinity after dramatic shootout

Continentals doubled up the Bantams in shots and had more penalty corners

CLINTON, N.Y. – The Hamilton College Continentals rallied for a 2-1 NESCAC win against the Trinity College Bantams after two overtime periods and a shootout in a clash of Top 25 teams at Hamilton's Goodfriend Field on Saturday, Sept. 9.

Season Update

  • The nationally ranked No. 24 Continentals improved to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the conference with the victory in their 2023 home opener.
  • No. 9 Trinity dropped to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the NESCAC. The Bantams played in the quarterfinals of last year's NCAA Division III championship.

How It Happened

  • Hamilton's Alden Duserick '27 converted her attempt and gave the Continentals a 2-1 advantage in the fourth round of the five-round shootout.
  • Trinity, which was going second in the shootout, still had two chances to even things up after Duserick's successful attempt. Hamilton goalkeeper Abby Griffin '26 was up to the challenge. Griffin forced Brooke DiBiase to hit the right post and Katrina Winfield missed the cage wide right on the fifth and final attempt.
  • The shootout started off with a bang as the Continentals' Alana King '24 and the Bantams' Jackie Frank found the back of the cage with their attempts.
  • The Continentals trailed 1-0 after three quarters, but they were awarded a penalty corner less than a minute into the fourth. King took a pass on the left side and centered the ball to Hannah Dillon '24, who scored on a low shot from about five yards away from the cage.
  • Both teams had chances to break the tie late in regulation. The Bantams had two corners and two shots in the last five minutes, and Lucy Werner made a defensive save for Trinity on a shot by King in the final minute.
  • There were plenty of quality scoring chances during the two 10-minute, sudden-victory overtime periods. Both teams were awarded four corners in the first overtime, and Hamilton took six shots, including three on goal, during the 20 minutes of extra time.
  • Maeve Hymovitz gave the Bantams a 1-0 lead with 9:19 left in the third quarter. Hymovitz, who had inserted the ball on a penalty corner 19 seconds earlier, was all alone near the left post where she batted a shot into the back of the cage after Griffin turned away a shot from the right side by Winfield.

Notes

  • Dillon, who led the Continentals in points last year, notched her seventh career goal and 25th career point.
  • King has an assist in both Hamilton games this year. She has eight in her career with the Continentals and 20 points.
  • Griffin made four saves and was a big reason why Hamilton prevailed in the shootout.
  • Olivia McMichael made 10 stops for Trinity.
  • The Continentals held a 23-11 shot advantage, and were awarded 12 penalty corners to the Bantams' nine.
  • Hamilton has won three of the last four meetings with Trinity.
  • The Continentals also edged the Bantams in a shootout the last time the teams played at Hamilton in October 2021.

Next Game

The Continentals travel to the University of Rochester (2-1 overall) for a non-conference game on Wednesday, Sept. 13. Start time is 7 p.m.
