No. 17 field hockey edges No. 21 Rochester in overtime, 1-0

Dillon '24 scored the game-winner and leads the Continentals with five points

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Hamilton College's Hannah Dillon '24 scored with 4:30 left in the first sudden-victory overtime period and lifted the Continentals to a 1-0 non-conference win against the University of Rochester Yellowjackets under the lights at Rochester's Fauver Stadium on Wednesday, Sept. 13.

Season Update

  • Nationally ranked No. 17 Hamilton remained undefeated at 3-0 overall. This was the second straight nail-biter for the Continentals, who edged then-No. 9 Trinity College after a shootout on Sept. 9.
  • The No. 21 Yellowjackets dropped to 2-2 overall. Rochester came out on the losing end of a shootout on Saturday.

How It Happened

  • With the teams playing seven-on-seven in overtime, Alana King '24 had the ball about 10 feet from the right post and her back to the cage. King backhanded a nifty centering pass to a charging Dillon, who tried a one-timer from two yards above the penalty stroke dot, but she fanned on the shot.
  • The goalkeeper charged out to meet a shot that never came and fell to the turf. Meanwhile, Dillon regained control and maneuvered the ball to the left a few feet. She wristed a high backhand shot from six yards away past the scrambling keeper and off a defender's raised stick before it settled into the netting at the back of the cage.
  • The Yellowjackets nearly won the game a couple minutes earlier. Hamilton's Grace Cooper '24 came to the rescue with a defensive save on a shot off a penalty corner.
  • Defense ruled during regulation as the teams combined for just 10 shots, including five on goal.

Notes

  • Dillon leads the Continentals with two goals and five points.
  • Cooper has three defensive saves in her Hamilton career.
  • Abby Griffin '26 made one save and posted her second career shutout. Griffin has a 0.58 goals against average and .714 save percentage in three starts.
  • Kara Houston stopped four shots for Rochester.
  • The Continentals have allowed just 16 shots through their first three games.
  • Hamilton has won the last four meetings with the Yellowjackets. The past three have gone to overtime.
  • The Continentals held a 9-4 shot advantage and were awarded eight penalty corners to Rochester's four.
