No. 17 field hockey takes first loss this season, falls to 3-1

Continentals play at Tufts on Saturday, Sept. 23

CLINTON, N.Y. -- The Hamilton College Continentals were handed their first loss of the season by five-time defending national champions Middlebury College, 6-0, at Hamilton's Goodfriend Field on Saturday, Sept. 16.

Season Update

  • The nationally ranked No. 17 Continentals dropped to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in NESCAC play.
  • The top-ranked Panthers (4-0, 2-0 NESCAC) extended their win streak to 13 games dating back to last year.

How it Happened

  • Middlebury pressured early in the first quarter, converting two penalty corners for goals by Amy Griffin and assisted by Sadie LeStage in the opening five-plus minutes. A goal by Charlotte Marks off another penalty corner made it 3-0 with 6:58 left in the first quarter.
  • Early in the second quarter, a scramble by the cage drew Hamilton goalkeeper Abby Griffin '26 off the line. However, Grace Chapis '24 stepped into position just in time to make a defensive save on a shot by Katie George.
  • The Panthers scored their fourth goal 3:07 into the second quarter off a diving hit by George at the back post.
  • The Continentals had an opportunity late in the second with back-to-back penalty corners, but a shot by Hannah Dillon '24 went just wide of the cage.
  • The Continentals held Middlebury off the scoreboard until the last eight minutes of the fourth quarter when the Panthers tacked on two more goals.

Notes

  • Griffin tied a career high with eight saves.
  • Hamilton had allowed just two goals and 16 shots in its first three games this season.
  • Middlebury's KK Newton earned her fourth win and fourth shutout.

Next Game

The Continentals travel to face NESCAC rival Tufts University (4-0, 2-0) on Saturday, Sept. 23 in Medford, Mass., at 11 a.m.
