Continentals tried to rally after the Cardinals scored twice in the third quarter

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Wesleyan University's Georgia Adams scored two goals in the third quarter and the Cardinals held off the Hamilton College Continentals 2-1 at Wesleyan's Smith Field on Sunday, Sept. 24.

Season Update

  • Nationally ranked No. 15 Hamilton dropped to 3-3 overall and 1-3 in the NESCAC with its third straight loss. The combined record of those three teams is 19-1.
  • The Cardinals (6-1, 3-0) defeated a ranked team for the second time in as many days.

How It Happened

  • It was a tale of two halves for Wesleyan, which had one shot and one penalty corner in the first half, but exploded for 10 shots and eight corners in the last 30 minutes.
  • Adams scored her first goal following a penalty corner 3:30 into the third. Imani Ochieng was credited with the assist.
  • Adams struck again 2:18 later with her ninth goal this season. Sydney Cameron had the assist.
  • Lilly Truchon '26 cut the Continentals' deficit in half 1:12 into the fourth quarter. Hamilton was awarded a penalty corner, which led to two shots by Truchon that were denied by goalkeeper Audrey Pace. A scrum ensued about five yards from the cage and lasted for several seconds. Finally, Truchon was able to poke the ball free as it rolled past Pace and over the goal line.
  • The Continentals weren't able to get off another shot, even after they pulled goalkeeper Abby Griffin '26 for an extra field player with 4:21 left.

Notes

  • Truchon scored her first goal this season and the sixth of her career.
  • Griffin finished with two saves.
  • Pace stopped six shots.
  • Hamilton took half of its 12 shots in the first quarter.
  • The Cardinals ended up with 11 shots, and they owned a 9-5 advantage in penalty corners.
  • The Continentals had won the previous seven meetings; Wesleyan last defeated Hamilton in 2014.
