Men’s soccer topped by Middlebury, Hawthorn ’25 scores

Junior forward netted his eighth career goal for the Continentals

CLINTON, N.Y. – Four Middlebury College players scored and the Panthers posted a 4-1 NESCAC win against the Hamilton College Continentals at Hamilton's Love Field on Saturday afternoon.
 
Season Update
The Continentals shifted to an 0-2-2 overall record (0-2-1 NESCAC). Middlebury (3-0-1, 1-0-1) is ranked 21st in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll. 
 
How It Happened
  • Hamilton came out strong with six shots in the first nine minutes including one by Julian Jacobs '24 that hit the post. Two minutes later, Middlebury took a 1-0 lead on a header goal by Shane Farrell that was assisted by Will Sawin. 
  • The Panthers quickly added to their lead in the 18th minute. 
  • The Continentals slashed their deficit in half at the 21:42 mark on a goal by Charles Hawthorn '25. Ross Eagle '26 intercepted a pass near midfield and chipped the ball up field. Peplowski battled for a touch near the edge of the 18-yard box and slid the ball over to Hawthorn who placed a shot in the lower left corner.
  • Middlebury's Luke Madden tacked on another goal powered by a corner kick with 17:54 remaining in the first half for a 3-1 cushion at the break. 
  • The Panthers struck for a final time with 11:09 left. 
  • The Continentals attempted nine shots in the second frame with four of those on goal but Middlebury's Ryan Grady made the saves. 
  • Hamilton owned a 22-17 shot advantage. 
  • The Continentals held an 8-6 edge on corner kicks. 
Notes
  • Hawthorn registered his first goal of the season and eighth of his career. 
  • Peplowski collected his first assist of the season and the 10th of his career. 
  • Madden tallied his third goal of the season for the Panthers. 
  • Middlebury's Farrell, Kyle Nilsson and Colin Dugan all tallied their first goal of the season. 
  • Kai Haesslein '24 made five saves for Hamilton. 
  • Grady tallied nine saves for the Panthers. 
Next Match
The Continentals will host local opponent SUNY Polytechnic for a non-conference match on Tuesday, Sept. 19 at 4:30 p.m.
