Baseball splits NESCAC West Division doubleheader with Williams

Eshleman ’25 picked up his third win this season for the Continentals

CLINTON, N.Y. – Hamilton College's Jack Eshleman '25 tallied seven strikeouts in Game 1 and the Continentals split a NESCAC West Division twinbill with the Williams College Ephs at Hamilton's Loop Road Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon. 
 
Season Update
  • The Continentals (12-8, 4-1 NESCAC) extended their win streak to eight with an 8-1 win in the opener. 
  • The Ephs (8-10, 3-3 NESCAC) bounced back with a 9-5 victory in Game 2.  
Game 1
How It Happened
  • Hamilton took a 3-0 lead in its first at-bat on four hits. Phil Bernstein '23 led off with an infield single and advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt. Greg Kopp '25 plated Bernstein with a single through the left side. Lucas Herman '26 singled up the middle and Shane Dux '24 drove in two runs with a two-out triple to left center. 
  • The Continentals added four runs in the third for a 7-0 advantage. Jay Schlaefer '23 had a big two-run single down the left field line with two outs. 
  • Williams got on the scoreboard in the fourth with one run on a leadoff double, a sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly. 
  • Hamilton answered in the bottom half of the inning on a Jackson Sattinger '24 solo home run over the fence in right field. 
  • The Ephs had one baserunner, who was erased on a double play, over the last three innings. 
Notes
  • Sattinger tallied his second homer of the season and the sixth of his career with the Continentals. He finished with two hits and leads the team with a .407 batting average. 
  • Kopp finished with two hits and extended his hit streak to a dozen games. 
  • Dux has four career triples and 41 career runs batted in. 
  • Eshleman improved his record to 3-0 as he allowed just one run on two hits and walked one in five innings. He has a 1.46 ERA and 41 strikeouts in 24.2 innings. Eshleman has a WHIP of 0.61 and opponents are hitting just .143 against him.
  • Daniel Jirgal '26 tossed two scoreless innings of relief.
Game 2
How It Happened
  • Hamilton took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Ethan Harrast '23 nailed a one-out triple to right center and scored on an error by the second baseman. 
  • Williams countered with three runs in the fourth and extended its lead to 5-1 in the sixth on a two-run double by Henry Juan. 
  • The Continentals took one run back in the bottom half. Bernstein led off with a walk, stole second and advanced to third base on a throwing error by the catcher, and scored on a groundout by Kopp. 
  • Hamilton evened the score at 5-5 with a three-run rally in the seventh. Harrast was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on a single to right center by Dux. Michael Tallarida '26 plated Dux with a triple to right center and Taylor Kaufman '26 drove in Tallarida with a sacrifice fly. 
  • Williams took the lead for good with three runs in the eighth and added an insurance run in the ninth. Cole Whitehouse's RBI triple with two outs made it 6-5 and James O'Connor followed with a two-run homer.
Notes
  • Dux collected a team-best two hits and ended up batting .600 (6-for-10) in the three-game series against the Ephs. 
  • Tallarida has three triples and an .844 slugging percentage this season. 
  • Harrast tallied his third triple of the season and tied the team record with eight for his career. 
  • Jakob Cohn, Juan and Daniel Lynch led Williams with three hits apiece. 
  • Five Ephs pitchers combined for six strikeouts. Nine of Williams' 14 hits went for extra bases.
Next Game
Hamilton will host the University of Rochester (15-8 overall) for a non-conference contest on Tuesday, April 11 at 4 p.m.
