Tallarida ’26 walk-off HR lifts baseball to wild win over Rochester

First-year cranked three-run shot with one out in the bottom of the ninth for the Continentals

CLINTON, N.Y. – Hamilton College's Michael Tallarida '26 smacked a walk-off, three-run homer and the Continentals posted a 13-11 non-conference win against the University of Rochester Yellowjackets at Hamilton's Loop Road Athletic Complex on Tuesday afternoon. 
 
Season Update
  • The Continentals (13-8 overall) won for the 13th time in their last 15 games after they started the season with six straight losses. 
  • Rochester, which is a member of the Liberty League for baseball, moved to 15-9 overall. 
How It Happened
  • After the Yellowjackets took the lead in the top of the ninth, Hamilton's Shane Dux '24 led off with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ethan Harrast '23. Kinne drew a walk and Tallarida slapped a pitch over the fence in right center, touching off a wild celebration.  
  • Rochester opened the scoring in their first at-bat with a run on two singles and a throwing error. 
  • Hamilton quickly answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning. Phil Bernstein '23 drew a leadoff walk and moved to third on a double to right center by Taylor Kaufman '26. Bernstein scored on a balk and Jackson Sattinger '24 plated Kaufman with a sacrifice fly. 
  • The Continentals had their best inning in the second with six runs on five hits, two walks and an error. Kaufman's two-run single up the middle made it 5-1 and Matt Kinne '25 drove in Harrast with a two-out double to right for an 8-1 advantage. 
  • The Yellowjackets tacked on two runs in the third inning on two hits and a walk. 
  • Kinne restored the seven-run cushion with a two-run blast over the fence in left with two outs. 
  • Rochester cut into its deficit with two runs in the fifth, one in the sixth and one in the eighth. The Yellowjackets completed the comeback in the ninth with four runs for an 11-10 lead. Joseph Rende tied the score with a two-run double to right and put Rochester in the lead when he scored on an infield error.
Notes
  • Tallarida is tied for second in the NESCAC with five home runs and leads the conference with an .860 slugging percentage.
  • Kinne knocked in a career-best three runs on a double and his first homer at Hamilton.
  • Kaufman drove in two runs on two hits. 
  • Sattinger plated a pair of runs. 
  • Carter Chambers '25 singled and drove in his first run of the season. 
  • Lucas Herman '26 singled and drew two walks.  
  • Kaufman, Harrast, Kinne and Chambers recorded one stolen base each.  
  • Five of Hamilton's 11 hits went for extra bases.
  • Ed Connolly '23 and Daniel Jirgal '26 struck out the side in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively. 
  • Eddie Taylor '25 collected his third win of the season as he pitched the last 1.2 innings. 
  • Rochester's Aaron Whitley recorded a team-best four hits, including a double, and scored four runs. 
  • Josh Leadem, Joseph Rende and Jackson Reed had three hits each. 
  • Rende plated five runs and Reed drove in two. 
  • Colby Cruser led Rochester's pitching staff with four strikeouts in 2.2 innings pitched. 
  • Justin Grossman tossed three scoreless innings of relief for the Yellowjackets.
Next Game
  • Hamilton returns to NESCAC action with a three-game weekend series at Middlebury College (13-6, 1-2 NESCAC West) starting Friday, April 14 at 4 p.m.
