Men's lacrosse falls at No. 6 Middlebury, Wunderle '23 scores four

Senior attackman is in the top six in the NESCAC in goals and points for the Continentals

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Middlebury College's Billy Curtis recorded six points and the Panthers pulled away in the second half for a 14-7 NESCAC win against the Hamilton College Continentals at Middlebury's Youngman Field on Wednesday, April 5.
 

Season Update

  • Hamilton (4-5, 2-4 NESCAC) lost for the third time in its last four games.
  • The nationally ranked No. 6 Panthers (8-1, 5-1) have won all four of their home games.
 

How It Happened

  • The Continentals scored twice in the opening two minutes of the first quarter but couldn't pull away from Middlebury as the Panthers tied the score five times.
  • Torben Wunderle '23 gave Hamilton its last lead at 6-5 on a pass from Troy Pollock '25 with 10:44 left in the third quarter.
  • Middlebury scored the next six goals. Brendan Hickey drew the Panthers even with 6:36 remaining in the third, and Curtis fed Jack Sheehan for a man-up goal that gave Middlebury its first lead with 3:52 to go in the period.
  • The Panthers led 8-6 after three quarters and 11-6 with 9:52 left in the fourth.
  • Pollock scored the Continentals' last goal and Rowan Brumbaugh '23 picked up the assist with 7:42 remaining.
 

Notes

  • Wunderle paced the Hamilton offense with four goals. He's tied for fifth in the conference with 31 goals and tied for sixth with 43 points.
  • Jack Fried '25 made 19 saves in his first collegiate start for the Continentals.
  • Brumbaugh chipped in a goal and two assists. He leads the team with 18 helpers.
  • Pollock tied a career high with three points on a goal and two assists.
  • Justin Pearl '25 scored his 11th goal this season. He has at least one goal in each of the last five games.
  • Christian Byrne '24 was credited with his fifth assist.
  • Jayme Wilde '25 scooped up six ground balls and caused three turnovers. He leads the NESCAC with 3.13 caused turnovers per game and is tied for ninth with 4.50 ground balls per contest.
  • Reece Hickey '26 won 10 faceoffs and collected six ground balls.
  • Tim Sommer '23 tied a season high with four ground balls and caused two turnovers.
  • Curtis had the assist on five of Middlebury's last eight goals. He also scored with 4:47 left in the fourth quarter.
  • Russell Thorndike registered two goals and an assist, and Patrick Jamin had a goal and two assists.
  • Luke Simpson posted five caused turnovers and five ground balls.
  • Billy Dobensky added four ground balls and three caused turnovers.
  • Hayden Kern stopped nine shots including five in the second quarter.
  • The Panthers held a 31-14 shot advantage in the second half. Middlebury doubled up Hamilton 22-11 in ground balls after halftime.
  • The Continentals were 14 of 27 on clear attempts.
