Baseball splits NESCAC West Division twinbill at Wesleyan

Taylor ’25 improved his record to 4-0 this season for the Continentals

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Hamilton College's Taylor Kaufman '26 banged out his first career home run and the Continentals split a NESCAC West Division doubleheader with the Wesleyan University Cardinals at Wesleyan's Dresser Field on Saturday, April 29. 
 
Season Update
  • Hamilton (18-13, 6-6 NESCAC West) shut out the Cardinals 5-0 in the seven-inning opener, but lost 5-2 in the nightcap. The Continentals ended up with the West Division's third seed for the 2023 NESCAC championship. 
  • Wesleyan (15-16, 7-5 NESCAC West) clinched first place in the division. The Cardinals host East Division fourth seed Bowdoin in a 2023 NESCAC championship quarterfinal series. 
Game 1
How It Happened
  • Hamilton scored two runs in the top of the second. Jackson Sattinger '24 led off with a single to right, Shane Dux '24 singled to center and both advanced a base on a balk. Lucas Herman '26 nailed a run-scoring single to right and Greg Kopp '25 knocked in Dux with a single up the middle. 
  • The Continentals made it 3-0 in the sixth. Michael Tallarida '26 singled through the right side with two outs, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single to left by Herman. 
  • Hamilton plated a pair of insurance runs in the seventh. Jackson Johns '24 led off with a walk and Kaufman smacked a two-run homer over the fence in left with one out. 
Notes
  • Herman led the Continentals at the dish with two singles and two runs batted in. 
  • Dux added two singles while Phil Bernstein '23 had his 44th hit. 
  • Kaufman leads Hamilton with 26 runs batted in. 
  • Eddie Taylor '25 (4-0) allowed four hits in 2.2 scoreless innings of relief. 
  • Jack Eshleman '25 struck out two and retired the side in order in the seventh. 
  • Peter Jones '25 started on the mound and pitched 3.1 innings.
  • Ernie Little and Evan Diaz recorded two hits apiece, and Diaz tripled for the Cardinals. 
 
Game 2
How It Happened
  • After two scoreless innings, Wesleyan took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third with an unearned run. 
  • The Cardinals made it 4-0 in the fourth on a three-run homer by Jack Nally. 
  • Wesleyan scored another run in the sixth when Nally led off with a walk, stole second and third and went home on a throwing error. 
  • Hamilton countered with one run in the seventh. Kopp doubled to right center, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a ground ball to the shortstop. 
  • The Continentals added a run in the ninth on three walks and a hit batter, but left the tying run on base after the next two batters struck out. 
Notes
  • Sattinger led Hamilton at the plate with two hits. 
  • Kopp tallied his third double of the season and walked.
  • Ethan Harrast '23 chipped in his 88th career hit.
  • Herman drove in his 12th run of the year and third of the day. 
  • Johns contributed his eighth hit of the season. 
  • Tallarida drew a team-best two walks and Bernstein was hit by a pitch twice.
  • Sattinger (3-2) allowed four earned runs on nine hits and three walks and struck out three in six innings. Daniel Jirgal '26 fanned three more in two scoreless innings of relief. 
  • Little, Luke LaSaracina and Cole Torino had two hits each. 
  • AJ Karabenick (2-1) allowed just three hits and a walk and struck out 11 in six shutout innings. 
  • Joey Light-Rake earned his first save after striking out the side in the ninth.  
Next Game
Hamilton will travel to East Division second seed Colby College for a NESCAC championship quarterfinal series that starts Saturday, May 6. The teams will play two games starting at noon and a third game, if necessary, on Sunday, May 7 at 11 a.m.
