Softball rolls past Utica, Quinn ’25 bats in five

Continentals put the Pioneers away early with 12 runs in the first two innings

CLINTON, N.Y. – Hamilton College's Charlie Quinn '25 hit three singles and drove in a career-high five runs in the Continentals' 13-5 non-conference win against the Utica University Pioneers at Hamilton's Loop Road Athletic Complex on Wednesday.

Season Update
  • Hamilton (17-18 overall) snapped its four-game losing skid with a dominating performance.
  • Utica, which is a member of the Empire 8 Conference, moved to 17-14 overall.
How It Happened
  • Hamilton built a 5-0 lead in the first inning. Katlynn McGivney '23 led off with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Jordan Merklin '26 drew a walk and Ella Heftved '25 reached on a fielder's choice. Heftved stole second and Quinn nailed a two-run single to center field. Mikayla Worzel '23 ripped a two-out, two-run single to left and McGivney's infield single with the bases loaded scored another run.
  • After retiring the Pioneers in order in the top half of the second, the Continentals blew things open with seven more runs. Heftved drew a leadoff walk, stole second and scored on a single up the middle by Quinn. Emma Tansky '25 slapped an infield hit and Natalie Beebe '24 loaded the bases with a walk. Worzel knocked in one run with a groundout, Samantha Smith '23 tapped an infield single and McGivney drove in Tanksy with a single up the middle. Merklin reached on a fielding error that scored Beebe and Heftved drove in another run with a single. Quinn plated two more runs with a single to center field.
  • Trailing 12-0, the Pioneers broke through in the third inning with two runs on three hits and a walk.
  • Hamilton added its last run in the bottom half of the inning. Worzel hit a two-out triple to center field and Smith drove in Worzel with a single to left field.
  • Utica tacked on three runs in the fourth on two hits, three walks and a hit batter.
  • The game ended due to the eight-run mercy rule after the Pioneers mustered just one baserunner on an infield error in the top of the fifth.
