Baseball cruises past SUNY Polytechnic on Senior Day, 24-1

Kinne ’25 and Rix ’25 bang out three-run homers for the Continentals

CLINTON, N.Y. – The Hamilton College Continentals smacked a season-high 24 hits in a 24-1 non-conference triumph over the SUNY Polytechnic Institute Wildcats at Hamilton's Loop Road Athletic Complex on Sunday afternoon.
 
Season Update
  • Hamilton (16-11 overall) honored its 10 seniors after the game.
  • SUNY Poly, which is a member of the North Atlantic Conference (NAC), moved to 10-23 overall. 
How It Happened
  • Hamilton wasted no time and jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Phil Bernstein '23 led off with a single to right field, stole second base and eventually stole third. Ethan Harrast '23 slugged a triple to right field that drove in Bernstein, and Jackson Sattinger '24 scored Harrast with a double to left.
  • The Continentals broke open the bats in the second frame as they scored nine runs and took an 11-0 advantage. Mike Altman '23 led off with a single to center, Jack Clougherty '23 walked and Jackson Johns '24 loaded the bases with a bunt single to the left side. Bernstein forced in a run with a walk and Taylor Kaufman '26 cleared the bases with a triple down the right field line. Harrast reached on an infield single and Sattinger roped a two-run double to left center. Michael Tallarida '26 kept the offense hot, driving in two runs with a double to left center and Altman traded places with a run-scoring double to left.
  • Harrast drove in a run in the third frame with a sacrifice fly after Bernstein and Kaufman singled. 
  • Hamilton took a 20-0 lead with eight runs in the fourth inning. Charlie O'Brien '24 cracked a one-out single to left, Altman walked, Clougherty singled through the right side and Johns nailed a two-run double down the right field line. Bernstein kept the surge going with an infield single that scored Clougherty. Kaufman reached on an error, Edo Spadaccini '26 hit a run-scoring single up the middle with two outs, and Matt Kinne '25 sent a three-run, no-doubter over the fence down the left field line.
  • The Continentals tacked on four more runs with two outs in the fifth. Johns hit a single through the left side, Jack Griffin '24 walked and Quinn Perkins '25 knocked Johns in with a single to center. Kenny Rix '25 plated three more Continentals with a shot over the left field fence.
  • SUNY Poly scored its lone run with two outs in the ninth inning. 
Notes
  • Bernstein went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with four runs scored, two runs batted in and a walk. He leads the Continentals with 22 stolen bases and owns the team's all-time record with 95 career runs.
  • Harrast tallied two hits, scored twice and plated two runs. He recorded his fifth triple of the season and is the career leader with 10.
  • Kaufman cranked his third triple and finished with two hits and tied a season high with four runs batted in.
  • Johns finished with a career-best three hits and drove in two runs.
  • Kinne smacked his second homer in the last five games. He tied a career high with three runs batted in.
  • Sattinger plated three runs on his two doubles. He leads Hamilton with 10 on the season.
  • O'Brien finished with two singles.
  • Tallarida knocked in a pair of runs with his third triple.  
  • Rix roped his first career home run. 
  • Altman tied a season best with two hits and added his second career double.
  • Perkins added his first career hit and his first RBI.
  • Spadaccini collected his first collegiate hit and plated his first run.  
  • Nine of the Continentals' 24 hits went for extra bases.
  • Peter Jones '25 improved to 3-2 with four no-hit innings. Jones struck out two batters and walked two. 
  • Michael Ghiorsi '23, Brendan Kastner '23, Ed Connolly '23 and Clougherty combined on 4.1 shutout innings in relief.
  • James Lynch led the Wildcats with three hits and a run batted in.
  • Paul Barber and Zach Byrum contributed singles for SUNY Poly.
