CLINTON, N.Y. – Tufts University's Emma Joyce scored with one second left in the fourth quarter and lifted the Jumbos to a 9-8 NESCAC win against the Hamilton College Continentals at Hamilton's Steuben Field on a warm and breezy Saturday afternoon, April 22.
Season Update
- The Continentals (4-10, 1-9 NESCAC) are still receiving votes in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association Division III Top 25 poll.
- Nationally ranked No. 7 Tufts (11-3, 7-2) are tied for second in the conference standings with one game remaining.
How It Happened
- After Hamilton tied the score with 11.4 seconds remaining, Joyce won the ensuing draw control cleanly and sprinted towards the goal. She scored on a shot from point-blank range with nearly no time to spare. The scoreboard clock read one-tenth of a second and the officials asked for it to be changed to one second, but that wasn't nearly enough time for the Continentals to respond to Joyce's goal.
- Hamilton trailed 8-5 early in the fourth but rallied with three straight goals.
- Sarah Stonestreet '25 scored on a nice individual effort with 8:57 to go and added another goal with 6:05 left. The Jumbos were attempting to clear but a pass went over the goalkeeper's head. Stonestreet picked up the loose ball and scored while Tufts was scrambling to get back into position.
- It looked like the Jumbos were in control with possession in their offensive end and under a minute remaining, but Sarah Moore '23 forced the ball loose and Abby Smith '24 picked it up. After a timeout by the Continentals, defender Meghan Lane '24 ended up with the ball and bulled her way within a few feet of the crease where she shot and scored.
- The tie was the first since Hamilton's Maddigan Leifer '26 made it 2-2 on a free-position goal with 9:13 to go in the second quarter.
- Tufts, which never trailed, led 2-0 after the first quarter, 5-4 at the half and 6-5 at the end of three quarters. Alex Orlando '25 pulled the Continentals within one on a pass from Aine Cleary '25 with 39.5 seconds left in the third.
