Women's lacrosse edges No. 22 Ithaca with last-second goal, 13-12

Smith '24 scored with five seconds left for the Continentals in their season finale

ITHACA, N.Y. – Hamilton College's Abby Smith '24 scored with five seconds left in the fourth quarter and lifted the Continentals to a 13-12 non-conference win over the Ithaca College Bombers at Ithaca's Higgins Stadium on Wednesday afternoon, April 26.
 

Season Update

  • Hamilton (5-10 overall) is still receiving votes in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association Division III Top 25 poll. The Continentals were playing in their season finale.
  • The nationally ranked No. 22 Bombers (9-7) have lost five of seven in the month of April.
 

How It Happened

  • Ithaca stopped a Hamilton free-position shot but turned the ball over during its clear attempt with less than 40 seconds remaining. Smith scored the unassisted goal and time ran out before either team could gain possession of the ensuing draw control.
  • The wild fourth quarter featured 10 goals, three ties and two lead changes.
  • Emma Toes '25 gave the Continentals a four-goal lead, which was tied for their largest of the game, at 10-6 on an assist from Sarah Stonestreet '25 just 31 seconds into the quarter.
  • The Bombers countered with five straight goals in a span of less than six minutes. Sydney Phillips gave Ithaca an 11-10 edge with 7:42 to go.
  • Aine Cleary '25 tied the score on a free-position goal with 4:56 left and she scored again 1:20 later on a pass from Stonestreet.
  • Maddie Hall drew the Bombers even one last time at 12-12 with 1:55 remaining.
  • After a scoreless first quarter, the teams combined on nine goals in the second. There were four ties before Hamilton grabbed its first lead at 5-4 on a goal by Cleary with 46 seconds to go in the half.
  • Goals by Alana King '24, Cleary and Smith handed the Continentals an 8-4 advantage late in the third quarter.
  • Another goal by Cleary, sandwiched between goals by Phillips in the last 106 seconds of the quarter, made it 9-6 Hamilton going into the final 15 minutes.
 

Notes

  • Cleary scored a career-high six goals and is tied for fifth in the NESCAC with 43. It's the most goals scored in a season by a Continental since 2011.
  • After scoring one goal in each of her first seven games this season, Smith tallied a career-high three at Ithaca.
  • Stonestreet was credited with a season-high three assists and led Hamilton with 10 this season.
  • King scored twice and ended up second on the team with 18.
  • Alex Orlando '25 scored a goal for the sixth straight game.
  • Meghan Lane '24 won a season-best nine draws and is eighth in the conference with 4.57 per contest.
  • Sarah Moore '23 caused three turnovers and is tied for third in the NESCAC with 28.
  • Maeve Luparello '23, Kaitlin Reed '24 and Casey Fiore '24 combined to make seven saves for the Continentals.
  • Phillips helped lead the Bombers' offense with four goals, and Maizy Veitch chipped in three goals and an assist.
  • Caroline Wise scored a goal, picked up five helpers and won 11 draws.
  • Kaitlyn Russell recorded three ground balls and three caused turnovers.
  • Lexi Held turned away 19 shots including eight in the first quarter.
  • Hamilton held a 40-23 shot advantage including 12-2 in the opening 15 minutes.
  • Ithaca had nine of its 21 turnovers in the first quarter.
  • The Continentals won 7 of 10 draws in the fourth quarter.
  • Hamilton was successful on all 18 of its clear attempts while the Bombers failed to clear six times out of 24 attempts.
