Softball swept in non-conference doubleheader at home by RPI

Continentals jumped out to first-inning leads in both games

CLINTON, N.Y. – Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's Erin Askins had four hits and four runs batted in as the Engineers swept a non-conference doubleheader against the Hamilton College Continentals at Hamilton's Loop Road Athletic Complex on a brutally cold and damp Wednesday, April 19.

Season Update

  • The Continentals (16-16 overall) have lost six of their last eight games.
  • RPI (21-5) rallied for a 5-3 win in the opener and took the second game, 7-4.

Game 1

How It Happened
  • Hamilton took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Katlynn McGivney '23 led off with a single towards third base and moved around to third on a wild pitch and an infield error. Jordan Merklin '26 drove her in with a base hit down the third base line and went to second on the throw. Alessandra Priante '24 hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Emma Tansky '25, and Merklin scored the third run on another infield error.
  • The Engineers responded immediately, tying the score with three runs – all scored with two outs -- in the top of the second.
  • Askins drove in the go-ahead run with a two-out triple to left-center field in the fourth inning.
  • The Continentals threatened in the fifth when Tansky and Merklin hit one-out singles, but the next two batters popped up and flew out.
  • Callista Adorno added an insurance run in the seventh with a solo homer to the right of the 220-foot sign in center field.

Notes
  • Merklin finished with two singles for her second multi-hit game this season.
  • Tansky (6-5) pitched all seven innings and struck out nine. She allowed five runs on 11 hits and intentionally walked a batter.
  • Askins went 3-for-3 with a double and a triple and two runs batted in.
  • Maddy Brooks cracked a two-run double out of the ninth spot.
  • Alexis Cooke (8-2) allowed four hits and one earned run in four innings as she picked up the win.
  • Brooke Sroczinski earned her seventh save with three shutout innings.

Game 2

How It Happened
  • Hamilton took the lead again with a run in the bottom of the first inning. McGivney led off with a single towards the shortstop, stole second and moved to third on a groundout to second base. Priante drove her in with a perfect sacrifice bunt laid down on the right side of the infield.
  • RPI had another swift response, this time scoring four runs in the second inning. Askins made it 4-1 with a two-run single to right field. The Engineers added another run in the third.
  • The Continentals cut their deficit to 5-4 with three runs in their half of the third inning. Merklin plated two runs with a triple to right center and scored on Priante's bunt single towards first base.
  • Gabby Comeau gave RPI some cushion with a two-out, two-run single through the right side in the fourth inning.
  • Hamilton had three baserunners, including a two-out double by Alison Zorn '26 in the sixth, over the last four innings.

Notes
  • Merklin, who leads the Continentals with four triples, recorded her first multi-RBI game this season.
  • Zorn tops the team with nine doubles.
  • Mikayla Worzel '23 added her third double this season.
  • Teagan Graham '25 pitched two scoreless innings in relief of Natalie Beebe '24 (8-8). Graham has allowed two runs in her last 9.1 innings pitched.
  • Sydney Speanburg doubled twice, Evann McDowell singled and doubled, and Alex Ledger chipped in two hits for the Engineers.
  • Sroczinski (3-1) pitched the first four innings for the win.
  • Cooke came in for three scoreless innings of relief and earned her first save.
