Baseball wins fifth consecutive Jackie Robinson Classic

Continentals scored in every inning against Utica University

CLINTON, N.Y. – The Hamilton College Continentals shut out Utica University 16-0 in the 33rd playing of the Jackie Robinson Classic at Hamilton's Loop Road Athletic Complex on Tuesday, April 18. 
 
Season Update 
  • Hamilton (15-11 overall) has won four in a row against the Pioneers and holds a 17-16 edge in the Jackie Robinson Classic series with their local rivals. 
  • Utica, which is a member of the Empire 8 Conference, moved to 19-9 overall.  
How It Happened
  • The Continentals jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on hits by Phil Bernstein '23, Ethan Harrast '23 and Jackson Sattinger '24. 
  • Harrast drove in two more runs in the second frame with a single up the middle. 
  • The Continentals plated one run in the third and another two in the fourth inning. Greg Kopp '25 scored Sattinger on a single to left field that made it 6-0. Lucas Herman '26 knocked Kopp home with a double to the warning track in left center. 
  • Hamilton had a hot fifth with four runs on three hits and two walks. Jack Griffin '24 led off with a single up the middle, Bernstein walked and Taylor Kaufman '26 nailed an RBI-single through the right side. Bernstein and Kaufman executed a double steal that scored Bernstein, and Michael Tallarida '26 brought Kaufman home with a fielder's choice. Kopp topped off the inning with a one-run single to left. 
  • In the sixth Mike Altman '23 led off with a walk and eventually scored on a fielder's choice for a 12-0 advantage.
  • Hamilton exploded for four more runs in the seventh on four hits and two walks. Matt Kinne '25 led off with a double to left center and Kenny Rix '25 and Edo Spadaccini '26 drew back-to-back walks. Charlie O'Brien '24 drove Kinne in with a single up the middle, Carter Chambers '25 plated Rix on a single to right field and Jack Clougherty '23 roped a one-run single through the right side. 
  • Four Hamilton pitchers allowed a total of seven baserunners (three hits, three walks, one hit batsman) in eight innings. 
  • The contest was suspended due to weather in the bottom of the eighth. 
Notes
  • Bernstein was selected the Continentals' most valuable player as he finished 2-for-3 with three runs scored, two runs batted in and a season-high three stolen bases. 
  • Harrast drove in a team-best three runs on a triple and a single. 
  • Kopp tied a season high with three hits and had two runs batted in. He recorded his first stolen base of the season. 
  • Clougherty plated his first run of the year on a season-high two hits.  
  • O'Brien batted in a run on his second hit of the year. 
  • Sattinger went 1-for-2 with two walks and a run batted in. 
  • Kaufman drove in his 18th run of the season on a single and two walks. He added a season-high two stolen bases. 
  • TJ Takis '26 earned the start and the win as he allowed one hit and one walk and struck out four in two innings in his first collegiate appearance. 
  • Eddie Taylor '25 recorded three strikeouts in four scoreless innings. 
  • Henry Tyler '25 and Brendan Kastner '23 pitched one inning of relief apiece. 
  • Joe Crossley, who doubled in the first inning, was named Utica's most valuable player of the game. 
  • Jason Story doubled and Joe Battista added a single for Utica. 
Next Game 
Hamilton hosts another local opponent SUNY Polytechnic on Sunday, April 23 at 2 p.m. Hamilton will honor its nine seniors during a Senior Day ceremony before the game.
