Baseball splits NESCAC West Division doubleheader at Middlebury

Sattinger ’24 earned his third win this season for the Continentals `

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Hamilton College rallied with two runs in the sixth inning in Game 2 and the Continentals split a NESCAC West Division twinbill with the Middlebury College Panthers at Middlebury's Forbes Field on Saturday afternoon. 
 
Season Update 
  • Hamilton (14-10, 5-3 NESCAC) bounced back with a 3-2 win in Game 2.
  • Middlebury (16-7, 3-3) earned the series win with a 9-8 victory in eight innings in Game 1. The Panthers, who edged the Continentals 8-6 on Friday, are receiving votes in the D3baseball.com/NCBWA Top 25 poll.  
Game 1
How It Happened
  • Hamilton made an early statement with four runs on five hits and an infield error in the top of the first. Phil Bernstein '23 led off with a single to center, Taylor Kaufman '26 singled to left center and Shane Dux '24 hit a two-out infield single. Ethan Harrast '23 reached first on an error that scored Kaufman. Greg Kopp '25 nailed a run-scoring single to right and Lucas Herman '26 plated two more on a single through the left side. 
  • Middlebury tied the score with four runs in the second on five hits and an error. 
  • The Continentals regained the lead in the third inning. Kopp and Herman smacked back-to-back singles, Michael Tallarida '26 walked and Bernstein drove Kopp home on a fielder's choice. 
  • The Panthers took their first lead at 6-5 on a two-run single by Kyle McCausland. 
  • Hamilton knotted the score at 6-6 in the sixth inning. Two walks and a hit batsman loaded the bases with one out, and Harrast scored on a wild pitch. 
  • Middlebury added two more runs in the bottom half of the inning on a trio of hits and a walk. 
  • The Continentals tied it at 8-8 in the seventh. Harrast's single to center scored Bernstein, who had led off with a single to right, and an outfield error allowed the tying run to score. 
  • The Panthers left the bases loaded in the bottom half and the game went to extra innings. 
  • Middlebury plated the winning run in the eighth on two singles, an error and a sacrifice  bunt. 
Notes
  • Herman tied a season high with two runs batted in on two hits. 
  • Harrast singled, walked twice and scored twice. 
  • Bernstein and Kopp both knocked in a run on two hits. 
  • Dux had two hits while Sattinger singled and Jack Griffin '24 doubled. 
  • Jack Clougherty '23 tossed a scoreless fifth inning.
  • Andrew Gough and Kyle McCausland finished with two hits and two RBI apiece. 
  • Sammy Smith and Nathan Samii recorded two hits apiece.
  • Jack Stolper tripled, walked twice and drove in two runs. 
  • Spencer Dessart picked up his third win of the season as he got the last four outs and didn't allow a run. Middlebury's pitching gave up just two earned runs. 
Game 2
How It Happened
  • Middlebury took the lead with a run in the third frame. 
  • Hamilton evened the score in the top of the fifth inning. Harrast singled through the left side, stole second and third and scored on an error. 
  • The Continentals took a 3-1 lead with two runs in the sixth. Carter Chambers '25 led off with a single to right center and stole second. Sattinger walked and Kopp loaded the bases with an infield single. Griffin worked the count for a walk that forced in Chambers. Harrast drove in Sattinger on a sacrifice fly to center that ended up being the difference. 
  • The Panthers took one run back in the bottom half on a walk and a sacrifice fly. 
  • Clougherty set down Middlebury in order in the seventh and final inning. 
Notes
  • Kopp, Harrast and Chambers had Hamilton's three hits. 
  • Harrast had a team-best two stolen bases. He has a hit in four of the last five games.
  • Sattinger allowed one unearned run on four hits and one walk in five innings. He has a 3-1 record and a 1.38 ERA.
  • Clougherty picked up his first save this season and the third of his career with two innings of hitless relief. 
  • John Collins, Andrew Ashley, Smith and Stolper had Middlebury's four hits. Ashley doubled.  
  • Five Panther pitchers combined to strike out six batters. 
Next Game
  • Hamilton hosts Amherst College (13-8-1, 3-2) for a re-scheduled NESCAC West Division game on Sunday, April 16 at 2 p.m. The third game of the season series was originally set for March 31.
