Men's lacrosse bags important NESCAC road win at Williams, 14-9

Continentals dominated the third quarter after Fried '25 made 13 saves in the first half

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Hamilton College's Jack Fried '25 made 17 saves and the Continentals posted a 14-9 NESCAC win against the Williams College Ephs at Williams' Farley-Lamb Field on Wednesday, April 12.
 

Season Update

  • Hamilton (6-5, 4-4 NESCAC) won its second straight conference game on the road.
  • The Ephs (6-5, 4-3) received votes in this week's U.S. Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Division III Top 20 poll.
 

How It Happened

  • The score was tied 7-7 at the half but the Continentals scored the next five goals and Williams didn't find the back of the net again until there was 10:45 left in the fourth quarter.
  • Reece Hickey '26 won the opening faceoff of the third quarter and Justin Pearl '25 put Hamilton in the lead for good 28 seconds later.
  • Rowan Brumbaugh '23 made it 9-7 with 11:16 remaining in the third and Thomas Healy '26 scored with 9:39 to go.
  • The Ephs took a 30-second penalty with 6:45 left in the quarter and the Continentals converted their extra-man opportunity 29 seconds later. Will Heher '25 passed to Healy for the man-up goal and 11-7 advantage.
  • Hamilton claimed the ensuing faceoff on a violation and Ben Ryan '26 scored on a pass from Charlie Ratner '23 with 5:34 remaining.
  • The Continentals led 12-7 at the end of three quarters. After Nick Bates scored for Williams early in the fourth, Hamilton clinched the win on goals by Zach Lucchini '25 and Christian Byrne '24.
  • The Ephs took an early lead with two goals 42 seconds apart less than two minutes into the first quarter.
  • The Continentals responded with five straight goals, including two apiece by Pearl and Heher. Hamilton held a 5-4 edge after the first 15 minutes.
  • Williams tied the score with 10:39 to go in the second quarter, but Byrne and Torben Wunderle '23 notched goals for the Continentals and put them up 7-5 with 5:17 left.
  • Will Doran pulled the Ephs within one and Ryan Johnson tied the score with 16 seconds remaining.
 

Notes

  • Wunderle led the Hamilton offense with four points on a goal and three assists. He is seventh in the NESCAC with 53 points, eighth with 34 goals and tied for 11th with 19 assists.
  • Pearl scored a season-high three goals for the second straight game.
  • Brumbaugh and Heher posted two goals and an assist apiece. Brumbaugh is tied for eighth in the conference with 23 assists. Heher's three points tied a career high for the second consecutive game.
  • Byrne and Healy finished with two goals apiece. Healy is second on the team with 24 in nine games.
  • Lucchini scored his first goal with the Continentals.
  • Hickey won 15 of 22 faceoffs and scooped up a season-high 10 ground balls.
  • Jayme Wilde '25 caused two turnovers and collected five ground balls.
  • Matt Mirkovic '23 picked up a career-best five ground balls.
  • Fried kept Hamilton in the game early as 13 of his 17 stops came in the first half.
  • Johnson paced Williams with two goals and an assist. Calvin Caputo and Finlay MacKnight chipped in a goal and two helpers apiece.
  • Matthew Freitas turned away 15 shots in goal for the Ephs.
  • In the pivotal third quarter, the Continentals held a 21-4 shot advantage, won all six faceoffs and had 10 ground balls to Williams' none.
  • Hamilton scored on two of its three extra-man opportunities. The Continentals lead the NESCAC and is second in NCAA Division III with a man-up scoring percentage of 56.7 percent (17-30).
 

Next Game

Hamilton hosts Trinity College (6-6, 3-4) for another conference contest on Saturday, April 15 at 1 p.m. The Continentals will recognize their 14 seniors before the start of the game.
