AMHERST, Mass. – Amherst College's Bridget Finley scored the game-winning goal on a free-position attempt with 2:14 left in the fourth quarter and lifted the Mammoths to a 7-6 NESCAC win against the Hamilton College Continentals at Amherst's Pratt Field at Lehrman Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Season Update
Nationally ranked No. 19 Hamilton was playing its season opener. The Mammoths were also competing for the first time this season.
How It Happened
- Neither team led by more than two goals and there were four ties and three lead changes.
- Emily Petersen gave Amherst a 6-4 advantage 41 seconds into the fourth quarter.
- Sarah Creamer '26 pulled the Continentals within one on her goal with 7:16 remaining, and Alana King '24 tied the score on a free-position goal with 4:38 to go.
- Creamer's first collegiate goal gave Hamilton a 1-0 lead 1:58 into the first quarter.
- Clara Sosa put the Mammoths in front with two goals – the first with 6:42 left in the opening quarter, and the second with 6:31 remaining in the second.
- The Continentals went back in front on two goals scored while they had an extra-player advantage late in the quarter. Aine Cleary '25 picked up a ground ball and scored to make it 2-2 with 4:43 to go while an Amherst player was on the sideline with a yellow card. Julia Fornasar '24 added another goal for Hamilton with 1:14 left while two Mammoths were serving yellow cards.
- Fornasar gave the Continentals a two-goal advantage with 5:58 remaining in the third quarter.
- Amherst took a 5-4 lead into the final 15 minutes after scoring three goals in the last 5:06 of the third.
Notes
- Creamer and Fornasar led the Hamilton offense with two goals apiece. Fornasar recorded the third multi-goal game of her career.
- King scored her 20th career goal and Cleary tallied her 19th.
- Sydney Klepper '26 had an assist on Fornasar's first goal for her first collegiate point.
- Meghan Lane '24 tied a career high with six ground balls and added two caused turnovers and two draw controls.
- Sarah Moore '23 chipped in three caused turnovers and three ground balls.
- King and Creamer won two draws apiece.
- Maeve Luparello '23 started in goal for Hamilton and made one save in the first half. Casey Fiore '24 came in for the second half and stopped three shots.
- Jessye Salmon made four of her seven stops in the second quarter for Amherst.
- Colleen Mooney led the Mammoths with five ground balls and won three draws. Petersen led all players with five draw controls and Rachel Rogers caused three turnovers.
