Men’s lacrosse outlasted in season opener by No. 17 Amherst

Wunderle ’23 and Sommer ’23 scored three goals apiece for the Continentals

CLINTON, N.Y. – Amherst College's Tanyr Krummenacher and Brock Gonzalez netted four goals apiece and the nationally ranked No. 17 Mammoths posted a 15-10 NESCAC win against the Hamilton College Continentals at Hamilton's Withiam Field on Sunday afternoon. 
 
How It Happened
  • Hamilton's Jayme Wilde '25 opened the scoring 53 seconds into the first quarter. 
  • Krummenacher evened the score at 1-1 with 12:33 remaining. 
  • Tim Sommer '23 put the Continentals ahead with a goal on a feed from Justin Pearl '25 with 10:46 to go.
  • Sommer scored a man-up goal 1:40 later on a pass from Rowan Brumbaugh '23. 
  • Amherst scored the next two goals and knotted the score at 3-3 at the end of the first.
  • Hamilton's Torben Wunderle '23 netted back-to-back goals 37 seconds apart for a 5-3 advantage with 12:07 to go. 
  • Pearl made it 6-4 after a faceoff win by the Continentals' Michael Scoleri '24. 
  • The Mammoths countered with two goals and evened the score at 6-6 at the half. 
  • Amherst scored five unanswered in the third quarter for an 11-6 cushion and led the rest of the way. 
  • Amherst took its largest lead at 15-8 with 6:06 remaining in the fourth. 
  • Hamilton added goals by Sommer and Thomas Healy '26 in the last 4:48. 
  • The Continentals were 1-for-3 on extra-man opportunities while the Mammoths were 0-for-2. 
  • The Mammoths owned a 20-9 advantage on faceoffs.
  • Hamilton outshot Amherst 59-51.

  • Amherst (1-0, 1-0 NESCAC) is ranked 17th in the USILA Division III Top 20 poll. 
  • Wunderle collected four points on three goals and an assist. He picked up seven ground balls. 
  • Sommer chipped in three goals.
  • Pearl scored a pair of goals while Healy and Wilde netted one apiece. 
  • Brumbaugh dished out two assists and collected six ground balls. 
  • Wilde led Hamilton with eight ground balls and four caused turnovers. 
  • Seamus Fagan '23 tallied 16 saves in goal for Hamilton. 
  • Jake Bennett, Matt Adams and Bayard DeMallie scored two goals each for the Mammoths. 
  • Mitch Likins made 18 saves in net for Amherst.
